00:00 dcook Looks intriguing
00:02 jcamins I have been foiled by the time, so I'm making wasabi-ginger chocolate chip cookies instead.
00:03 dcook Sounds even more intriguing
00:04 dcook Although I can't say I'm much of a wasabi/horseradish fan
00:06 jcamins They're delicious.

01:31 dcook Has anyone had problems with local cover images not appearing in the staff client?
01:31 dcook The OPAC is looking good but they're not appearing at all in the staff client, even with LocalCoverImages syspref turned on
01:33 jcamins dcook: it's not really a problem.
01:33 jcamins It was never implemented at all.
01:33 dcook O_o
01:33 dcook I had a feeling that might be the case, but then why the LocalCoverImages syspref?
01:33 dcook It seems like there might be some code in a few places too
01:34 jcamins For the tab.
01:34 wizzyrea you can see them in the staff client, they're just not in the spot where you expect them.
01:35 dcook "local cover images on intranet search and details pages."
01:35 dcook Perhaps instead it should say "in the images tab on the details page"
01:35 wizzyrea probably should
01:35 jcamins Sure.
01:36 dcook Or someone implements them for the search results and up in the corner for the detail page :p
01:36 jcamins Well, that's not going to be me.
01:36 jcamins I donated way more time to that feature than it was worth.
01:36 dcook Not saying it should be, jcamins ;)
01:36 dcook Sorry to hear that too

02:16 mtompset Greetings, #koha.
02:17 dcook allo mtompset
02:18 mtompset Thought I would come here and ask what people's opinion about three install.ubuntu type files are, and what sort of instructions should be in a single one?
02:19 dcook I'm not sure I follow
02:19 dcook But I'm intrigued
02:20 mtompset in a git clone, (or a tar.gz) of koha, there are three ubuntu installation instruction files: INSTALL.ubuntu, INSTALL.ubuntu.12.04, and INSTALL.ubuntu.lucid
02:20 dcook My "To Do" list still has "set up Koha" on Debian (and maybe Ubuntu) at home, so the better the install instructions I use...the better I can comment and suggest revisions :)
02:22 mtompset It would seem that INSTALL.ubuntu is for Jaunty?!
02:23 mtompset If you do ubuntu, I would recommend[…]ubuntu_-_packages
02:24 mtompset The Determine IP Address step is confusing for the utter novice, but it should be clear enough for someone trying to jump from the package install to a web install steps.
02:24 mtompset Assuming they have some networking and system administration background.
02:24 dcook Which they might not
02:24 mtompset There in is the problem.
02:25 dcook My networking/sys admin background is...a bit of what I've picked up here at work...and from the last web server that I set up at home in 2011
02:25 dcook I can research like a champ though ;)
02:25 dcook But it's not about me
02:25 dcook Hmm
02:25 dcook I have this dream of being able to hand some instructions to librarians I know so that they can set up Koha
02:26 dcook But if you have fool proof instructions, you also don't learn how to do anything but follow instructions
02:26 dcook So when it doesn't work according to plan, you're still hooped
02:26 dcook But, at least you will have it installed..
02:26 mtompset That's the problem.
02:26 mtompset There are multiple ways to configure apache2.
02:26 mtompset So which way do you write instructions for?
02:27 mtompset The default packages work best with the named host method.
02:27 * dcook shrugs
02:27 mtompset The problem becomes getting them to have the apache2 server accessible from the machine that they want it accessible from.
02:27 mtompset Is that the same terminal running desktop ubuntu?
02:28 dcook For anyone wanting to run a prod machine, for sure
02:28 mtompset Is it a different terminal, and then they need to set up DNS stuff?
02:28 dcook I suppose that's why support companies exist, eh?
02:28 dcook Lots of variables
02:29 mtompset It's that tumultuous mess that makes writing the perfect set of instructions impossible.
02:29 dcook Mhm
02:30 mtompset The problem also becomes when some librarian at some university (for example) wants to try out Koha, but they can't get to work, because their IT department is incharge of the DNS set up.
02:30 mtompset And their IT department doesn't want to set it up, because it is for testing purposes.
02:31 mtompset I wrote the wiki instructions with the mindset of a desktop ubuntu terminal running it as and
02:32 mtompset (or server, assuming you can figure out how to navigate lynx)
02:33 dcook In that case, since it's for testing purposes...can't they run it by just using the local IP address?
02:34 mtompset not using named hosts.
02:34 dcook O_o
02:34 * wizzyrea would suggest adding the names to the local hosts file in that case
02:34 dcook Mmm
02:34 wizzyrea to bypass DNS
02:34 dcook Good one
02:34 mtompset That's exactly what the instructions do.
02:35 dcook I suppose the problem is when the librarian doesn't realize it is just running locally?
02:35 mtompset That too.
02:35 wizzyrea technically, you could put the entry in any machine's hosts file
02:35 wizzyrea if you can't sort DNS
02:35 mtompset Right, and if the IP addresses are on the same subnet, it should work.
02:35 wizzyrea is a problem if you want it for public
02:35 wizzyrea of course
02:36 eythian but in that case, someone _must_ set up DNS
02:36 eythian there is no real other option
02:36 wizzyrea or the server is public
02:37 wizzyrea you can do hosts for a server with a public IP, it's just exceedingly not optimal
02:37 mtompset Which is also why the instructions say to talk to the system, network administrators.
02:37 wahanui okay, mtompset.
02:37 mtompset forget which
02:37 wahanui mtompset: I forgot which
02:37 eythian I don't consider IP address access on a public server to be an option :)
02:38 mtompset It's a really bizarre one, so it isn't normal.
02:39 mtompset But you can't rule out the strangeness that people will attempt.
02:39 wizzyrea if it can be done, people will try to do it
02:40 eythian yeah, but they shouldn't do that. If they can't work out DNS, they shouldn't be making a public server. They should be finding someone to help them with it.
02:40 mtompset While I see other people here, am I correct to assume that subfields are character and not numeric (ie. eq not ==)?
02:40 dcook Maybe they don't want to use DNS?
02:40 dcook Maybe they're super underground ;)
02:40 eythian dcook: in that case they should set up a .onion address :)
02:40 wizzyrea people do strange things when they are testing.
02:40 wizzyrea people do strange things.
02:40 dcook Touché, eythian
02:41 mtompset -- While I see other people here, am I correct to assume that subfields are character and not numeric (ie. eq not ==)?
02:41 dcook Subfields?
02:41 jcamins Correct.
02:41 mtompset Then I have found a bug. :)
02:41 mtompset Not to figure out how to test it. ARG!
02:42 mtompset Now to figure out how to test it. ARG!
02:42 mtompset And spell better. :)
02:42 eythian mtompset: yeah, subfields are usually characters actually.
02:43 mtompset well, it seemed weird to me that has a == instead of eq
02:43 mtompset And I was getting an error log entry.
02:46 dcook Never even heard of that script
02:46 dcook Learn something new every day..
02:50 eythian jcamins: 773$w of the child should contain the value in 001 of the parent, yeah?
02:51 eythian and something stuff to the leader
02:51 jcamins eythian: yes.
02:51 eythian ta
02:52 wizzyrea ^ speaking of learning new things
02:52 dcook Hmm
02:52 dcook That's interesting...
02:53 dcook It would not be nice to update a 001 for the parent and not the child $w...
02:54 eythian I don't think you're supposed to update the 001 anyway
02:56 jcamins Except for when you are merging records.
02:56 jcamins Or creating a new record.
02:57 dcook How about if you wan to start distributing your records?
02:57 dcook And you haven't had an official control number before that?
02:58 dcook I suppose control numbers might not be official?
02:58 dcook But 003s are..
02:58 dcook Ack
02:58 eythian you can put who created them in 003
02:58 dcook Right
02:58 dcook But there are invalid and valid identifiers for 003
02:59 dcook But now that I think about it...001 should always be internal..
03:00 dcook "For interchange purposes, documentation of the structure of the control number and input conventions should be provided to exchange partners by the organization initiating the interchange."
03:01 dcook Which goes back to what you guys were saying
03:01 dcook There's no reason to change a 001
03:01 mtompset Okay. Forgive me, I am not a librarian. Can someone explain authorities to me? :)
03:01 eythian authorities are templates for parts of biblio records.
03:02 mtompset Okay, so let's say I have biblio records with 700$a's and 100$a's filled in.
03:02 mtompset I search the authorities. No results.
03:02 eythian They prevent you having "Will. M Shakespaar" and "Willy S." and "William Shakespeare" all meaning one person.
03:02 mtompset I know I have some authorities, because I watched a full zebra reindex.
03:03 eythian Hmm. how are you searching them?
03:03 mtompset Is there a quick and easy way to populate missing authorities?
03:04 eythian Not that I know of, but I don't deal with them all that much.
03:04 mtompset home -> cataloging -> search catalog -> the -> choose something to Edit Record -> 1 or 7 tab -> tag editor -> search?
03:04 jcamins There is not, no.
03:04 jcamins Not even a hard and slow way, really.
03:04 jcamins Other than "create each one by hand."
03:04 mtompset That sounds like a potentially useful tool to write then?
03:05 mtompset build a list, get the user to confirm them, fill them in.
03:05 jcamins It'd be very useful.
03:05 dcook Hmm
03:05 jcamins And is almost certainly not the right tool for the job.
03:06 jcamins Just so we're clear.
03:06 dcook jcamins++
03:06 eythian I've made them from CSVs before.
03:06 * dcook tries to remember the conversation that jcamins, dcook, eythian, et al had a while back
03:06 dcook Right
03:06 jcamins I use CSVs, when I have to generate them.
03:07 dcook You can extract your existing subjects, authors, etc from your DB
03:07 dcook Output as CSV, them, import, then
03:07 jcamins But I use authorities for actual authoritative data.
03:07 dcook Although then you still have authority work to do as a librarian
03:07 dcook As you should :)
03:08 jcamins Well, yeah.
03:08 dcook hehe
03:08 jcamins I guess that is kind of the point.
03:08 mtompset Okay, just looked at -- what's wrong with it? Other than it seems a little too automatic.
03:08 bgkriegel I used frederic demians script, koha-auth, to extract auth data and to link
03:08 jcamins It is for linking existing bibs to existing authorities.
03:08 jcamins Only.
03:08 jcamins That's it.
03:09 jcamins It generates authorities in some circumstances but only as a side effect of it doing its job.
03:09 dcook O_o
03:09 dcook That's...
03:09 dcook what?
03:10 mtompset if the bibs don't exist, how can you have an authority record?
03:10 jcamins Easily.
03:10 jcamins You get the authorities from an authority.
03:11 papa joined #koha
03:11 mtompset Okay, but why would you want an authority for a bib or bibs that you don't have in your collection?
03:11 jcamins dcook: it generates authorities only if you tell it -- basically -- "I think I have all the authorities, and if not, I'd like the gaps filled in."
03:11 mtompset bgkriegel: where is the koha-auth script?
03:12 bgkriegel cpan
03:12 bgkriegel
03:12 jcamins Personally, I think generating any authorities with is a bad idea that can only end in pain.
03:12 mtompset Because you'll have to re-edit them to correct mistakes?
03:13 mtompset (which is just as painful and entering one at a time?)
03:13 jcamins And because you'll end up with duplicates.
03:13 jcamins Much more painful.
03:13 mtompset Oh, that would be more painful.
03:13 bgkriegel It's not perfect, but a starting point. Mainly for librarians that never used authorities
03:14 dcook True
03:14 jcamins ... but if your librarians don't use authorities, you should be asking yourself if they need authorities at all.
03:14 dcook makes me think if they haven't used authorities...maybe they shouldn't use them
03:14 dcook Mhm
03:14 dcook Exactly
03:14 jcamins Librarians will demand authorities if they need them, most of the time.
03:15 jcamins CS people rarely understand why/when they are necessary, in my experience.
03:15 dcook I've had career cataloguers mention that is where a lot of the "librarian" work comes in as well. They have lib techs do a lot of the data entry and they do the authority policing as it were
03:16 eythian jcamins: presumably only the CS people who haven't had to deal with the data that users type into computers, right?
03:16 dcook If they want a simple way of just choosing "authoritative" spellings, it might make more sense to just use an authorized_value list
03:16 eythian if it's a short list, yeah
03:17 dcook Yeah, it does get more problematic when you have a longer list
03:17 dcook But then you also need a librarian who is willing to look after the authorities, especially if they aren't actually authoritative authorities
03:17 mtompset CS people?
03:17 jcamins eythian: actually, my experience has been that the more expert a CS person is, the more they think that authorities are unnecessary.
03:18 jcamins (with the exception of people who actually work in libraries, of course, who eventually realize that authority records in fact _do_ do more than simply add overhead)
03:19 mtompset But aren't authorities a sort of index of information unto themselves?
03:19 eythian jcamins: hmm, I just hold the opinion that people are terrible and need to be protected from themselves as much as feasible. That naturally follows on to things like authority records.
03:19 jcamins eythian: I agree completely.
03:20 mtompset What did you mean by CS people, jcamins?
03:20 eythian mtompset: computer science
03:21 jcamins I had in mind the people who are experts in database theory.
03:21 mtompset just wanted to make sure I didn't assume incorrectly. :)
03:22 dcook mtompset: As you can see, there's a lot to authorities ;)
03:23 dcook Really, if there isn't a librarian to look after them, I would highly suggest not using them
03:23 jcamins You can recognize the type of person I have in mind because they say things like "it's just a foreign key, why do you need an entire MARC record"?
03:23 * dcook twitches
03:23 * dcook had a feelings that's what jcamins meant
03:23 mtompset It seems like it is a sort of what level of normalization is required problem, and the Librarians and CS folks don't quite see eye to eye, because the CS folks don't have all the facts about how authorities are used?
03:23 eythian well, also library data tends to be used differently to a regular database of data
03:24 eythian in that a MARC record is a self-contained thing that may travel
03:24 eythian and so needs to carry all its context with it
03:24 jcamins Have horror, will travel. :)
03:24 eythian quite :)
03:24 mtompset also, wouldn't it be handy to have a trail of where the data came from?
03:24 dcook hehe
03:24 eythian mtompset: it sorta does have that
03:24 wizzyrea mtompset: it does, sorta
03:24 wizzyrea ha
03:24 dcook That's partially where the 001/003 come in
03:25 eythian jcamins: unrelated, but have I told you that I've established a canonical source for csvtomarc?
03:25 eythian mtompset: also 040$a
03:25 jcamins eythian: you had not.
03:25 dcook Sometimes also the 035
03:25 mtompset Isn't that the point of storing the whole MARC record?
03:25 dcook 016 too I think
03:25 dcook and 010
03:25 eythian I might mean 035 instead of 040
03:25 jcamins eythian: actually, you mean both.
03:25 dcook yep
03:26 dcook You can see a 040 with a huge string of subfields
03:26 dcook It's kind of neat sometimes
03:26 eythian[…]igration-toolbox/ <-- jcamins. I've been cleaning it out a bit, and adding my stuff to it, along with actual migration scripts to act as examples.
03:26 dcook Apparently 040 also relates to 008/39
03:26 dcook MARC certainly has its issues...
03:27 eythian wahanui: marc
03:27 wahanui The MARC specs live at - abandon hope all ye who enter here.
03:27 eythian wahanui: marc
03:27 wahanui
03:27 jcamins dcook: bwahaha! It's a FRBR joke!
03:28 jcamins eythian: nice!
03:28 jcamins I should submit a pull request against that.
03:28 eythian by all means
03:28 jcamins It has been added to my to-do list.
03:28 jcamins Probably won't happen until after May 22.
03:28 dcook Oh FRBR...
03:28 eythian no problem
03:29 dcook I like the abstract idea of WEMI, but...
03:29 bgkriegel bye all
03:29 dcook ta bgkriegel
03:29 * jcamins dislikes WEMI altogether.
03:30 dcook mtompset: Authorities become really important when you're trying to differentiate between a hundred different John Smiths
03:30 jcamins If you're interested in talking about work/edition/issue/state, that's what you should talk about.
03:30 dcook And correctly linking/attributing the right author to the right work
03:30 mtompset True enough, dcook.
03:30 dcook work/edition/issue/state
03:30 jcamins And if that's not your goal, Expression and Manifestation should be combined.
03:30 jcamins dcook: no, you had it right.
03:31 jcamins It's Work/Expression/Manifestation/Item.
03:31 dcook Yeah, I know
03:31 dcook I'm intrigued by this other idea
03:31 jcamins I disagree with FRBR on principle.
03:31 jcamins Ah!
03:31 dcook Yeah, maybe expression and manifestation could be combined
03:31 jcamins My favorite subject!
03:31 jcamins Bibliography!
03:31 dcook hehe
03:31 jcamins You know what you should read?
03:31 jcamins Let me find it.
03:31 dcook Eeee!
03:31 jcamins Greatest article ever.
03:32 dcook Personally, I love the idea of searching "Hamlet" and finding all sorts of different expressions or manifestations or whatevers of Hamlet
03:32 jcamins Here we go:
03:32 dcook The films, the screenplays, the graphic novels, the novels, et
03:32 dcook etc*
03:32 jcamins It's going to be like a bolt of light striking.
03:33 dcook It's now on the to do list :D
03:34 eythian I like when I find a feature in csvtomarc that I wrote a couple of years ago, forgot about, and now it's exactly what I need.
03:34 * eythian combines CSV fields with wild abandon
03:34 jcamins Yay!
03:34 * jcamins calls it a night.
03:34 jcamins Good night, #koha.
03:35 eythian it's barely an afternoon
03:35 eythian catch you later
03:35 dcook night, jcamins
03:36 dcook Whoa when did 1:30pm happen?
03:36 mtompset Good night, jcamins. :)
03:36 wizzyrea :D
03:36 mtompset You mean 11:32 EDT? ;)
03:36 mtompset You mean 11:32 PM EDT? ;)
03:36 dcook eythian: You were talking about a canonical source for
03:36 wizzyrea You mean 23:32 EDT?
03:36 eythian mtompset: It's not that late on the east coast of Australia
03:36 dcook As in having a central repo for it?
03:36 eythian dcook: yeah
03:37 dcook I keep meaning to try it out..
03:37 eythian I was finding I was accidentally making forks of it
03:37 dcook Eeep!
03:37 mtompset Yes, 23:33 EDT, wizzyrea.
03:37 eythian add a feature for this case, and forgetting to merge it back in
03:37 dcook Definitely an issue
03:37 eythian dcook: anyway, it's in that repo I linked above. All changes are in there.
03:37 dcook I think that's the same one you linked me to the other day
03:38 eythian it's quite possible
03:38 eythian actually, yes, I remember.
03:38 dcook You have to supply your own leader, 001/003/005/008, right?
03:38 mtompset oh, and koha-auth is available in squeeze-dev. ;)
03:39 dcook I have a note to myself about a 942 as weell..
03:39 eythian dcook: it slaps a default leader in without really caring what it is, and you can't yet change much of it.
03:39 eythian that's something that I'll be fixing some time
03:39 eythian everything else is fairly easy to set up.
03:39 eythian (well, 'easy' is relative)
03:39 dcook Ah, I see the leader there
03:40 dcook It's been a while since I looked at my experiment
03:40 eythian I think I just pulled that leader from something and made it the default.
03:40 dcook What the..
03:40 wahanui the is a stop word
03:40 dcook Looking at it is rather bizarre O_o
03:41 dcook At least in the authority context
03:41 eythian it works well for authorities, I've done it before
03:42 dcook Yeah, I think both you and jcamins were saying that
03:42 dcook I could see it working
03:42 dcook The beginning of the leader is just pretty nonsensical for an authority
03:42 eythian yeah
03:42 dcook Not that I'm complaining thouhg
03:42 dcook though*
03:42 eythian even with biblios, chunks of it are ignored.
03:42 dcook Absolutely
03:42 eythian that's not a reason to do it wrong, but most source data isn't detailed enough to generate a proper leader.
03:42 dcook I've wondered a bit about the record length..
03:43 eythian that's automatically computed by the MARC modules, so it doesn't go wrong.
03:43 dcook Hmm
03:43 dcook In my test, I have 00000
03:43 dcook 00000pam a2200000ua 4500 in fact
03:43 eythian hmm
03:43 eythian that's odd
03:43 eythian not what I'd expect
03:44 dcook I was a bit surprised originally
03:44 eythian are you outputting as usmarc or marcxml?
03:44 eythian I guess stuff like LDR 00843pam a2200193 a 4500
03:44 eythian and LDR 00768pam a2200205 a 4500
03:44 eythian *get stuff like...
03:44 dcook marcxml
03:44 eythian oh, then the length doesn't matter
03:44 dcook I take it you output as usmarc?
03:44 eythian typically yeah
03:45 dcook Mmm
03:45 eythian no particular reason, just habit mostly
03:45 eythian I think it's a bit faster to import, too
03:45 dcook Yeah, I've heard that it's faster
03:45 dcook Actually, lots faster for high volumes
03:46 dcook Now that I think about it...
03:46 * wizzyrea summons all of her willpower to not make a terribly inappropriate joke
03:46 dcook The import script would create the record length when creating the marc blob?
03:46 eythian yeah
03:46 dcook wizzyrea: :P
03:46 eythian wizzyrea: why stop now?
03:46 wizzyrea the comedy fodder, there's too much.
03:46 wizzyrea no single joke could encompass it all.
03:47 dcook I'll go make a sandwich. I hope to see some jokes when I come back :p
03:47 * wizzyrea was told this was a rated pg space.
03:47 wizzyrea my jokes are decidedly higher rated than that.

03:49 eythian Apparently it's 11:45pm.
03:49 mtompset a play on the words lots, faster, and high volumes? ;)
03:49 eythian I'm sure the kids are asleep.
03:49 wizzyrea and blob.

03:50 mtompset ^out^our^
03:50 wizzyrea nah I think I'll just avoid that
03:51 mtompset But dcook may be disappointed. :P
03:51 wizzyrea I think he can live with it
03:52 dcook I have several sandwiches and a full water bottle
03:52 dcook I'm good ^_^
03:53 mtompset Well, I think I best follow jcamins' lead and grab sleep while possible.
03:53 wizzyrea sleep is for the wea...zzzzzz
03:54 wizzyrea ^ me, most days.
03:54 eythian no, sleep is for the week.
03:54 wizzyrea hehe
03:54 wizzyrea only if you're sleeping for a week.
03:54 eythian wahanui: sleep is also for the week
03:54 wahanui okay, eythian.
03:55 wizzyrea I have child, therefore sleeping for a week is incredibly tempting, but utterly impossible.
03:55 wizzyrea sleep?
03:55 wahanui i heard sleep was for the week

14:11 oleonard kf: I prefer "No." and that seems to narrowly win over "#" in current usage in the template
14:12 gmcharlt good morning
14:12 kf oleonard: I was thinking... maybe we shoudl have that noted somewhere - library wins over branch, be careful when you say budget and mean fund... use no. etc.
14:12 kf after I did the no. patch I saw lots of # in the templates
14:13 kf but probably because I was looking for it
14:13 kf good mornign gmcharlt :)

17:53 mtompset no problems with es-ES.
17:53 mtompset I did an update to 202.

18:30 jcamins And actually, I don't think the icons were removed yet... most likely it's just that the path changed.
18:33 mtompset Hmmm... compared to 3.8.6 it may not have been added.
18:33 jcamins All the famfamfam icons were moved, I think.
18:34 mtompset famfamfam/silk?
18:34 jcamins I think you may find they were moved from /opac-tmpl/prog/en/famfamfam/ to /opac-tmpl/lib/famfamfam
18:34 jcamins Or something like that.
18:34 mtompset I'm playing with the staff client, but anyways...

18:38 jcamins Yup.
18:38 mtompset *sigh* This is frustrating not knowing how to trigger this bug.
18:40 mtompset And two save buttons on the authorities stuff seems weird, when one isn't styled.
18:41 jcamins Where do you see that?
18:43 mtompset several locations while hunting for how to trigger this blind thing.
18:43 mtompset Try adding a new authority, for example.
18:44 jcamins I only see one button.

18:44 jcamins Ah.
18:44 jcamins I see!
18:44 jcamins Tht second one can be eliminated.
18:44 jcamins *That
18:44 jcamins The first is always visible.
18:45 mtompset Yes, but I'm not sure they do the same thing.
18:46 jcamins They do.
18:46 jcamins If they don't, then that's a bug, and whatever the second one does should be done by a button with a less misleading function.
18:47 mtompset Well, I think someone in Q/A bug hunting/fixing needs to run through authorities, because I think there are some issues in that section. :(
18:48 jcamins mtompset: unfortunately, unless you're volunteering, my official stance as RM is "that's nice."
18:48 mtompset Thanks for that word of encouragement, jcamins. :P
18:48 * jcamins should probably not be on #koha, come to think of it.

18:49 mtompset Not being here may increase productivity.
18:49 jcamins Actually, I was more thinking "I'll be in a better mood if I am not reminded of Koha at all."
18:50 oleonard Harsh!

18:52 mtompset Are you on vacation, jcamins?
18:52 jcamins mtompset: no.
18:53 mtompset Then why would thinking of Koha ruin your mood? responsibilities piling up for RM task?
18:53 jcamins Something like that, yes.
18:54 jcamins The number of things in Koha that _aren't_ broken in some way and people don't complain about asymptotically approaches zero.
18:56 jcamins Something I never appreciated until I became RM.
18:56 mtompset I'm sorry if I induced feelings of stress by complaining. :)
18:56 jcamins It's okay.
18:56 * jcamins has a short fuse.
18:56 mtompset Me too. :)
18:57 cait jcamins: I think more things are working than used to... but I might just have seen worse :)
18:57 jcamins Not that this should be a surprise... I think I put in my proposal something along the lines of "as RM I will be irrascible and cantankerous."
18:57 jcamins cait: I think that too.
18:57 cait yeah, you are a grumpy person

19:00 mtompset Any ideas on how to trigger output into the koha error log intentionally?
19:00 mtompset I thought "warn" would do that.
19:00 jcamins mtompset: yeah. That's easy. What's hard is getting things to not show up in the error log.
19:00 jcamins warn "whatever"
19:01 jcamins It didn't work?
19:01 oleonard mtompset: Maybe you're looking at the opac instead of the intranet error log or vice versa?
19:01 mtompset I'm looking at /home/mtompset/koha-dev/var/log/koha-error_log
19:02 jcamins That should be the intranet.
19:02 mtompset I did, interestingly, get a nice white screen of nothing.
19:02 mtompset But the page has valid html source.
19:06 mtompset Guess that's what you get when you try to get Koha to save a mostly blank authority record.
19:09 oleonard No, you should never get that.
19:09 jcamins That's what you'd get if you printed something to the browser before the headers, though.
19:17 mtompset Hmmm... now it is working. ARG!
19:22 mtompset I guess I am now mapping the whole system, because this is crazy. I need to be able to trigger errors when I want. :(

19:52 magnuse jatara: rebuild your zebra index, perhaps?
19:52 cait khall: did you see the comment from robin about the accounts rewrite branch?
19:53 khall yeah, I've looked it over. I want to start from scratch, take all the data and functionality that's accrued over time and give it a full integration. The number of subs we have for making payments is silly!

20:09 mtompset does anyone remember what bits 8 and 18 were for permissions?
20:09 cait khall: difficult part is keeping our data intact I guess
20:10 cait khall: and it has to have all important data for accounting
20:10 khall indeed, my primary directive is to make sure there is a full migration path
20:10 cait well, you will have lots of fun with that ;)

23:34 eythian khall_away: good luck with the rewrite, I started that (ages ago) and it turns out everything talks to the account database directly. If you have a look for the docs that I did, it might give you a start for design, anyway.
23:36 bag oh yes please send those docs along!
