00:55 jcamins Hey, there's a command-line Marcedit tool!
00:57 eter hey
00:57 eter hi Brooke
00:57 Brooke :)
00:58 Brooke when regular MarcEdit is just not geeky enough?
00:58 jcamins Brooke: right.

01:00 Brooke bienvenido!
01:01 ULS muchisimas garcias a todos por crear esta comunidad de ayuda.
01:01 ULS tengo algunas consultas. Como le cambio el idioma a mi sistema koha. Al español?
01:01 Brooke hang on a tic, haven't had to change the language in forever.
01:03 ULS Any tutorial to change the language to Spanish koha?

01:07 pianohack Hallo Brooke
01:07 ULS buscando one moment ples
01:08 pianohack Finally have some free coding time :)
01:08 * Brooke cheers at pianohack
01:08 jcamins pianohack: lucky you!
01:08 jcamins Can I have some?
01:08 pianohack Hehe, once you do a engineering school finals week ;)
01:09 Brooke it's all downhill from finals in Trinity
01:09 * Brooke threatened her invigilator with a Glen of the Downs hike.
01:11 jcamins pianohack: what's the status on your text-based cataloging form? (not to be pushy, just wondering... last I heard there was a rumor you were going to try to polish it to submit to Master)
01:11 pianohack Yes! I had plans to do that, and then college hit me upside the head
01:12 jcamins Heh.
01:12 jcamins Welcome to higher education.
01:12 pianohack Indeed
01:12 pianohack Glad to be at school, but it changes your priorities when you're not looking
01:18 jcamins Yeah, it does that.
01:23 ULS left #koha
01:29 jcamins pianohack: how did your finals go?
01:30 pianohack Nothing too crazy this first semester, think I did well
01:30 pianohack It's next semester that'll be evil, with physics and calc 2
01:30 Brooke /me shudders.
01:32 pianohack Physics is supposedly one of the "weed-out" classes, so I might disappear again for a while :P
01:33 * Brooke rolls her eyes.
01:35 Brooke I have never understood the whole "weeding out" thing outside of the Forces.
01:37 eter ok so i've successfully installed koha (i'm a system amin that never had to do library before) now i want to configure koha with ldap think i see somewhere that it is possible, the potential users of this system already have id numbers which i want koha to use, i also have the users in ldap groups which i want to use as koha permissions
01:38 jcamins I don't know anything about LDAP, sorry.
01:38 pianohack Brooke: The official reason is they want to find out who "really wants an education"
01:38 pianohack Also known as the most crazy/obedient
01:39 pianohack eter: You might try a message to the mailing list; Joe Atzberger (atz) is very knowledgable about LDAP
01:41 eter ok,   we currently moving from a manual system where things were done by hand, is it possible that if i get a bunch of guys to start type data such as author title pub etc in a spreadsheet it will be importable into koha?
01:42 pianohack Yup, there are ways to get that data into Koha
01:42 pianohack If possible, you might try just cataloging the books in Koha, though
01:42 Brooke *nod*
01:43 Brooke you can rig ISBNs to MARCedit and play fetch, too.
01:43 eter any pointer into the right diretion would be extremely welcomed
01:43 pianohack There's usually a few issues with importing, and entering them directly into Koha allows you to download information from other library's catalogs to make the records nicer
01:43 pianohack Ooh, hadn't thought of that
01:43 Brooke however, you get the effort you put in.
01:43 pianohack eter: Is this a conventional public library with reasonably common books, or a specialized collection?
01:44 eter its a school...truth is i'm not knowledgeable on their collection, they just called me in to help them
01:45 jcamins eter: what kind of school?
01:45 jcamins Generally speaking, I mean.
01:45 eter college
01:46 Brooke :/
01:46 Brooke I feel like we need an a/s/l for collections.
01:47 eter i figur they might have things like research papers and so on...just speculating
01:47 Brooke the key is to find a similar collection and mine it for data.
01:47 eter a/sl ...age sex location?
01:47 Brooke but even there, there will always be tricky records
01:47 eter ok
01:47 jcamins eter: if they catalog research papers, they are totally SOL wrt copy cataloging.
01:47 Brooke expect about 85/15 no matter what.
01:47 * Brooke agrees with jcamins.
01:47 * jcamins works at a library which catalogs papers separately
01:48 eter whats SOL wrt? );
01:48 eter out of luck?
01:48 eter lol
01:48 Brooke ayep
01:48 jcamins Errr... stuck out of luck with regards to
01:49 eter hhmm lol
01:50 eter i was thinking that maybe i should give them the staff interface and let them start using it for populating the data...but being a newwbie to koha myself i'm still here trying to find videos to teach them how to add the data
01:51 eter whilst trying to find a way to adapt the interface to a theme of their liking
01:51 jcamins eter: there are a bunch of videos by nengard.
01:51 jcamins And perhaps Brooke knows where. :)
01:52 Brooke >.>
01:52 Brooke <.<
01:52 Brooke I keep telling people 1) the tapes never existed.
01:52 Brooke and 2) I didn't steal them
01:53 Brooke http://wiki.koha-community.org[…]ki/Koha_Tutorials
01:54 eter lol Brooke maybe the garbage man did
01:55 Brooke Yes...that's the ticket...
01:56 jcamins Argh!
01:57 jcamins For future reference, document.ready and document.load are not interchangeable.
01:57 jcamins (not that I thought they were, I just didn't realize I was editing document.load)
02:01 pianohack Even worse, it's window.load
02:01 pianohack Always annoyed me
02:01 pianohack Yay, installed Koha on Maverick w/o CPAN
02:02 pianohack chris_n++ # koha_perl_deps.pl is wonderful
02:03 eter i found two of nengards videos is there more?
02:03 Brooke prolly a tonne
02:04 jcamins koha_perl_deps.pl?
02:04 jcamins I don't think that's the one I use...
02:05 jcamins No, I use apt-get-debian-lenny.pl
02:05 jcamins How does koha_perl_deps.pl help you avoid CPAN?
02:15 jcamins Wow. Apparently the Koha repository has increased in size by 50% since May.
02:17 eter found some pdfs form nexpress here http://www.nexpresslibrary.org[…]s-september-2010/ hopefully good enough
02:18 eter jcamins, does that translate to more productivity?
02:18 jcamins eter: I have no idea.
02:19 jcamins I do know it translates to 50% longer download times, though. ;)
02:21 jcamins pianohack++
02:22 jcamins pianohack: any chance you could file a bug and attach your patch to the bug?
02:22 pianohack jcamins: Well, the lovely ubuntu packagers help you avoid having to install from CPAN, koha_perl_deps.pl helps you make sure you've installed everything right without constantly reloading the page in the installer; that was a pain
02:22 pianohack jcamins: Sure, one sec
02:22 jcamins pianohack: ah, got it. That makes sense.
02:24 eter i thought that dublincore package wasnt in maveric
02:26 jcamins pianohack: thanks!
02:26 pianohack jcamins: np
02:26 pianohack wow, you're on top of things
02:26 Brooke eter: you must be this tall to ride DC
02:26 pianohack Koha cyborg implant working for you? :)
02:27 pianohack (also, create the bug, assign it to myself, attach the patch, then mark it RESOLVED FIXED?)
02:27 jcamins pianohack: create the bug, assign to yourself, and I'll sign off on it, and send it to the list.
02:27 jcamins And mark the status signed-off.
02:45 Brooke cheers lads.

02:45 jcamins pianohack: how do you use dpkg --set-selections?
02:47 jcamins Ah, got it.
02:48 jcamins No, just kidding, I'm confused.
02:49 jcamins I apparently don't have dselect.
02:50 eter aptitude install dselect
02:51 jcamins Cool, thanks.
02:51 jcamins That worked.
02:51 jcamins :D
02:55 pianohack jcamins: Don't even need that
02:55 pianohack Just run apt-get dselect-upgrade
02:55 pianohack jcamins: Also, I did that bug a bit wrong, but will remember for the next :P
02:57 jcamins Okay, now, can I configure nullmailer with Google Apps...
02:58 jcamins Yep, looks like I can.
03:00 wasabi http://it.slashdot.org/story/1[…]ver-Wikileaksinfo
03:01 wasabi … a new twist to wikileaks
03:05 pianohack Hmm. Does Koha still care about your ParserDetails.ini? Thought I saw a patch to fix that
03:05 jcamins pianohack: yeah, it does.
03:05 pianohack Dammit
03:05 pianohack Okay, thanks
03:05 jcamins There's been some discussion about whether it *really* matters, but no one can figure out what the problem was originally.
03:06 pianohack Was some encoding issue, no?
03:09 jcamins Yeah, but the official bug report was "it doesn't work.
03:12 jcamins INSTALL.debian?
03:13 ibot rumour has it INSTALL.debian is at git.koha-community.org/gitweb/?p=koha.git;a=blob;f=INSTALL.debian
03:13 jcamins Thanks, ibot.
03:13 ibot jcamins: no problem
03:13 wasabi i bumped into a install problem with an incorrect ParserDetails.ini file recently
03:14 wasabi so i think Koha does depend on being correct, still...
03:14 jcamins Yeah, it does.
03:15 jcamins My understanding is that 3 of the four options *might* work.
03:15 jcamins (and the fourth definitely doesn't)
03:18 pianohack ibot: Well, hello there
03:18 ibot pianohack: i'm not following you...
03:18 pianohack Casual conversation is a lost art
03:23 jcamins Okay, that didn't work.
03:24 jcamins Wait, I know why.

03:27 jcamins Anyway, good night, #koha

03:31 kevinD I have a question about install if anyone is free
03:38 pianohack kevinD: I'm around, everyone else might be asleep
03:38 pianohack What's up?
03:43 kevinD Hi I am familiar with Drupal
03:43 kevinD Just wondering about the instal with Koha
03:43 pianohack Okay
03:43 pianohack kevinD: What's your question?
03:44 pianohack From what I remember of installing Drupal, they are kind of different
03:44 kevinD How complicated is the install with kohl
03:44 kevinD I have installed Drupa a few times using MAMP
03:45 kevinD Do you have a similar setup with kohl ?
03:45 kevinD Kohl
03:45 kevinD Koha
03:46 kevinD Sorry iPad changes the words
03:46 kevinD Pianohack are you still here
03:47 pianohack Sorry, doing two things at once
03:47 pianohack Let me look up mamp
03:47 pianohack Ah, ok
03:47 kevinD That was local
03:47 pianohack Umm, installing Koha on Mac OS X is really painful, last I heard, if you're considering that
03:47 pianohack Various issues with getting everything installed correctly
03:48 kevinD I do work for a non profit, they have a quilt museum that needs a database for library
03:48 pianohack Okay
03:48 pianohack Are you familiar at all with Linux?
03:48 kevinD So I told them I would look into it before I gave them a answer
03:48 kevinD No really some UNIX
03:49 kevinD not fluent
03:49 pianohack Okay
03:49 pianohack Koha is easiest to install on either Debian or Ubuntu Linux
03:49 kevinD I have heard of Drupal installed on ubuntu
03:49 pianohack If you're not familiar with Linux, there's a few options
03:49 kevinD I am all ears
03:50 kevinD Eyes I guess
03:50 pianohack Download the Koha live CD and try it out; you burn it to a CD-R, then boot your computer from it. No commitment or installation
03:50 kevinD Ok
03:51 pianohack Or, use the virtual machine images; you download them, then run them within Mac OS X or whatever using VMWare Player or Virtualbox (both free)
03:51 pianohack http://kylehall.info/index.php[…]irtual-appliance/ for that
03:51 pianohack Or just install Ubuntu on a spare machien
03:51 pianohack *machine
03:51 pianohack Very easy these days
03:51 pianohack You can even install it side-by-side with Mac OS X with a little work
03:52 pianohack First one is the easiest, but you can't do anything very interesting with it
03:52 pianohack Second is slightly harder, but works well
03:52 pianohack Third is the hardest, but allows you the most room to work down the road
03:52 kevinD That sounds fantastic thanks so much for your help
03:52 pianohack If you like the way you get that machine with Ubuntu on it set up, you could even just take it to the nonprofit and let them run Koha off of it
03:53 pianohack kevinD: np
03:53 pianohack There's usually someone here on IRC if you have questions
03:53 kevinD Thanks

13:46 jcamins So, how are things, cait?
13:46 cait lazy sunday
13:46 jcamins Uh-oh... my VM had a status of "Aborted." I hope I didn't break something.
13:47 cait have you seen my follow up to 5226=
13:47 cait ?
13:48 jcamins I had not.
13:48 jcamins It makes sense to me.
13:49 cait I forgot about it - stumbled on my bookmark earlier today
13:49 cait I tried jo's fudge recipe
13:49 jcamins How was it?
13:50 cait but I used too much condensed milk I think - it tastes very yummy, but is too soft and sticky to be cut into pieces
13:50 cait I added cranberries and walnuts instead of cashews
13:50 jcamins Actually, you probably just undercooked it.
13:50 cait and I think I got the soft ball stage right this time... perhaps
13:50 cait *sigh* I feared you would say something like that :)
13:50 jcamins Because that sounds like it didn't set.
13:51 cait hm
13:51 cait it's a soft brown
13:51 cait light brown
13:51 cait and the upper side is dry and ok, but on the bottom it's still a bit too sticky
13:51 cait sticks to my baking paper
13:51 cait I was able to form the ball in the cold water
13:52 cait perhaps I have to get a sugar thermometer

13:53 kmkale no worries I am home and munching away on fried stuff myself ;)
13:53 cait I was thinking about turning it around and try to let the other side dry a little
13:54 jcamins Hm. Yeah, I'd try that.
13:55 jcamins Also, did you try sticking it in the refrigerator?
13:59 cait no
13:59 cait but I can try that too :)
14:00 jcamins @later tell chris I signed off on the patch for bug 5520, but couldn't send it to koha-patches, so I attached it to the bug.

19:47 hdl hi.
19:47 chris i have been running circ under plack for 3 weeks now, and it hasnt exploded yet
19:48 hdl nice.
19:48 chris but there are places where we need to change code, (any place we use memoize without a timeout etc)
19:49 hdl Is it in production for one of your sites ? or is it just testing.
19:49 hdl ?
19:49 chris its on a very low usage prodcution site
19:49 hdl yes... and we would need to place flush_cache wherever parameters are edited.
19:49 chris hoping to move it to higher usage one when we fix the data persistance problems
19:49 chris yep
19:49 chris exactly
19:50 hdl have you tried the remove_items branch ? I think that then Plack would not be needed for that one ? How were is your circ performing  using Plack ?
19:51 chris its not much faster
19:51 chris because yes, its the parsing xml that is slow
19:51 hdl (mmm no, it would be needed for circulation parameters.)
19:51 chris but it is much more scalable
19:51 chris ie, it doesnt slow down
19:52 chris whereas if you put apache under load, you can break it
19:52 chris plack + caching = faster
19:52 chris (in code caching)
19:52 chris but we dont do a lot of that, because without persistance there is no point

20:05 Brooke this is why I had a pickle of a time coming up with the wiki, blank as it was.

20:07 hdl cait: a lot of people may be interested but they also will be able to read the logs....
20:07 cait hdl: I think after new year should be ok - a discussion can only take place if there are people to discuss things
20:07 jcamins hdl: but reading the logs is not the same as participating.
20:08 Brooke aye, it would also give you time to relax, cher.

20:45 chris if you could send us some marc records with the umlauts in them, then we can load them in to test
20:45 cait what I did right now was create a new library with code TEST and name äüäßÄÖÜ
20:45 chris ahh easy
20:45 cait chris: it's not the umlauts
20:45 cait ah not the records
20:45 cait did not really test that yet
20:45 cait the problems I reported is all data from the database
20:45 chris ahh i thought it was the records
20:45 chris (cos they are in the db too)
20:46 cait there is one problem spotted in the records too - but did not really test that yet
20:46 cait right :)

20:46 cait the library name is broken after saving

20:46 Brooke which is amusingly busted
20:46 * Brooke titters.
20:46 cait in display on the front page and when you open it for edit
20:47 cait Brooke: the umlauts there are broken too - but that's because of the normalization
20:47 cait the dots should be over the letters, not beside
20:47 Brooke but they aren't on the search screen
20:47 chris Brooke: has that got anything to do with the template toolkit stuff?
20:47 Brooke so I suspect it is a matter of display
20:48 * chris suspects not
20:48 cait Brooke: it's the normalization - trust me :)
20:48 Brooke I will trust you then.
20:48 cait they make u + dots in utf-8 - that is vlaid, but the browsers have problems
20:48 chris right .. back to the template toolkit work
20:48 chris so saving a branch name, ends up with the branch name messed up
20:48 Brooke just looked fine from
20:48 Brooke http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin[…]hist=1&type=quick
20:48 cait that's why we do some things to our data before loading into koha - making it a one character ü
20:49 cait chris: right
20:49 chris and you are about to test a record?
20:49 cait and that happens in a lot of places I tested
20:49 cait yep, can do that now
20:49 cait but the display is broken in a lot of places
20:49 cait you can test that with itemtype too and other things, it's always the same
20:50 cait my new record button does not work
20:50 chris right, so we just need to check if its records too
20:50 hdl good day nz and good night europa
20:50 chris cait: can you load one in?

20:50 cait yeah, but have to find one with real umlauts first
20:51 cait not so easy
20:51 cait or manipulate a loaded one... but add the button to the list
20:51 chris yup
20:51 chris cool, that should give us some stuff too look at :)
