00:22 jcamins Does anyone have any better suggestions for king mackarel than green Thai curry?
00:23 jcamins (not that I can think of much to top a Thai green curry)
00:24 wizzyrea polenta crumbed and pan fried.
00:24 wizzyrea not that it is *better* than curry, but different from curry.
00:25 jcamins Actually, we got a big fish this week, so maybe I'll do both. :D
00:40 dcook both \o/
00:40 * dcook is so tempted to get curry today...
02:21 jcamins That was the best Thai curry I have ever had.
02:23 wizzyrea yay!
02:23 jcamins I didn't have as much fish as I thought, so there was no polenta-crumbed mackarel.
02:25 wizzyrea oh well, another day ;)

14:19 ashimema hi tcohen.. i'm back now.
14:22 tcohen hi ashimema
14:22 ashimema tcohen, I wondered if you could give me a brief rundown of what the tamil indexer does as a comparison to rebuild_zebra.pl (with deamon mode and locking)?  I'd like to get bug 8773 checked off and am wondering about the coice of tmil vs native koha ;)
14:22 huginn Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]w_bug.cgi?id=8773 enhancement, P5 - low, ---, tomascohen, Signed Off , Add per-instance koha-index-daemon in .deb setup
14:27 meliss joined #koha
14:28 tcohen tamil's indexer is a collection of tools, plus the indexer. They are OO and nice. I don't like that it is outside the codebase
14:28 tcohen of the community's repo
14:29 tcohen bug 5166 proposed to refactor rebuild_zebra.pl as a library and a daemon script
14:29 huginn Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]w_bug.cgi?id=5166 enhancement, P3, ---, gmcharlt, CLOSED WONTFIX, Reintroduce a zebraqueue daemon, make several rebuild_zebra.pl functions a lib
14:29 tcohen (i don't like having rebuild_zebra.pl getting bigger and bigger)
14:30 tcohen bug 8773 specifically implements a straightforward to use any indexer script on a pre-instance basis
14:30 huginn Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]w_bug.cgi?id=8773 enhancement, P5 - low, ---, tomascohen, Signed Off , Add per-instance koha-index-daemon in .deb setup
14:30 tcohen s/pre/per/
14:31 tcohen what it does already exists on the 3.12 onwards codebase as koha-index-daemon-ctl.sh
14:31 tcohen this is just the packages counterpart
14:32 ashimema yeah, it would be nice to factor out rebuild into a library..
14:32 ashimema I see..
14:33 ashimema So, theoretically it shoudl work with either Tamil or the Deamon mode of rebuild_zebra depending upon the config
14:33 barton joined #koha
14:33 ashimema I'm still reaing through the comment history of the bug.. it's huge
14:33 tcohen yes, /etc/default/koha-common would be the place to set it
14:34 tcohen oh, I recall Tamil's indexer depended on Moose, which put it on hold in some people's minds
14:34 ashimema cheers tcohen.. I'll take a look at it shortly..
14:34 ashimema I suppose I should really get my head around the Tamil indexer at some point too as to make an informed decision on wether to stick to koha's internal script of use theirs
14:35 tcohen even thou I maintain our own packages set for 3.12.x at UNC, including 8773 patches
14:36 tcohen I stopped using the indexer daemon until I figure out why it is failing for authorities (DOM)
14:37 tcohen by the way, we used 5166's daemon in production for a couple of years until I realized it wouldn't get into Koha, and took me too much effort to rebase against every rebuild_zebra.pl refactoring/modification
14:37 ashimema ack..
14:38 ashimema so there's three disperate efforts to do the same things.. doug's recent work on rebuild_zebra.pl directly, your factoring out as a library, and tamils work external to koha altogether.. what a mess
14:38 ashimema thanks for clearing up the history

20:53 oleonard You guys don't understand, North American Koha users were clogging up the main Koha list with numerous questions specific to North America and it was just too much.
20:53 oleonard Alternatively: North American Koha users have super-secret stuff to talk about and you have to be North American to understand.
20:55 cait oh, it's good that you explained that
20:55 cait :)
20:56 * druthb waves her snark-o-meter at oleonard, to see if it detects snark coming from him.
20:57 * druthb bangs her snark-o-meter against the arm of her chair.  "Darn thing's busted."
20:59 druthb wow, 3PM already.  where has the day gone?
21:00 oleonard all that snark doesn't detect itself druthb
21:00 * druthb nods.
21:00 druthb You may have oversnarked it.
21:00 druthb broke mah meter.
21:02 gmcharlt oleonard: the motivation is much more to create a vehicle around which there can be at least the possibility of there being NA Koha conferences
21:04 Callender joined #koha
21:04 wizzyrea (which makes some sense.)
21:05 ashimema joined #koha
21:05 gmcharlt if regional conferences make sense anywhere, they presumably make sense for North American too
21:13 nengard I'm with gmcharlt
21:13 nengard there is a french users group, why not a north american one
21:14 nengard lots of open source software apps have multiple local users groups
21:14 wizzyrea yep, just call it KohaCamp or something
21:14 wizzyrea not kohacon. :P
21:14 nengard who's calling it kohacon?
21:14 nengard what did i mis
21:14 nengard miss
21:15 rangi no one is, just preemptive
21:15 nengard Of course there is only one KohaCon
21:15 nengard and there is only one Koha
21:15 rambutan quick, somebody trademark "KohaCon"
21:15 cait nengard: i tihn local user groups make sense
21:15 cait just wondering if dividing users up into so many mailing lists will work out
21:15 cait but we will see:)
21:16 nengard again - there are other language lists
21:16 nengard already
21:16 rambutan someday I'm going to start a list for Koha system admins.
21:16 oleonard Right, because those folks speak different languages
21:17 nengard true, but the issues discussed on a North American user's group list would be related to local meetings and developments that maybe libraries in the same country can co-develop etc etc
21:17 nengard You know me - I'm all about community and pushing everyone to participate in the global lists and chats etc
21:18 nengard but I also see why smaller local groups might want this kind of thing
21:18 gmcharlt rambutan: funny you should mention that; there was an abortive effort to do something similar in Evergreen, but it didn't go anywhere
21:18 gmcharlt in part, because of concerns about splitting the focus of open-ils-dev
21:18 gmcharlt which led to a /very/ chilly reception of the idea
21:18 rambutan well, I am serious, BTW, but there clearly isn't enough mass to support it right now
21:19 gmcharlt and in part, because ultimately there wasn't enough critical mass to push through the objections
21:19 rangi the proof is in the pudding
21:19 * cait agrees
21:19 rangi people use it, and still use the main list, its good
21:19 oleonard I think creation of a second kind of list should follow on the heels of "Gee, we sure are getting way to many of X kind of messages on the list"
21:19 rangi no one can predict it
21:20 rambutan I think that someday there will need to be a chat channel for sysadmins too. I mean, devs are nice to share this channel with occasional...
21:21 * gmcharlt generally favors the notion that if somebody wants a list, they're free to create it -- so long as the general understanding and expectation is that lists are allowed to and /will/ die after a few months in inactivity
21:21 rambutan off topic discussion, but I'm sensitive to the need to not distract devs from doing real work
21:22 rangi talking to your users is real work
21:22 rangi any dev that thinks it isnt, isnt a very good dev
21:22 rangi :)
21:22 gmcharlt and it's not like IRC is like a phone
21:22 rangi phones--
21:22 gmcharlt in *principle* a dev can turn it off if they need to concentrate
21:22 gmcharlt in practice... it does vary a bit ;)
21:23 rambutan yea, well, nice of you to say so, but when devs are talking about how to implement a bubble-up-and-down sort using javascript, it just doesn't seem....
21:23 nengard I think that we've gotten too sensitive on issues like this (user groups and such) because of past evils ... it's not all gonna go the way it did in the past
21:23 rambutan right to break in with a question about how to integrate a children's playstation with koha
21:24 rangi ahh, it's totally right to do that, as long as you dont specifically address one
21:24 rangi thats like us all in a room having 2 discussions
21:24 rangi thats fine
21:24 gmcharlt if we had rather more people actively talking, I definitely could see more reason to split channels
21:24 rangi its when you walk over and yell at me
21:24 jcamins I can see value in an additional mailing list for people who want something more like #koha in terms of "I'm doing something nuts and I want some feedback on it" without getting a "PLEASE UNSUBSCRIBE ME FROM THIS STUPID LIST YOU GUYS WRITE TOO MUCH" in response.
21:24 gmcharlt but ... we're not /that/ chatty IMO
21:24 rangi that that is bad
21:25 jcamins gmcharlt: except on baking day. Should there be a #koha-cooking channel? ;)
21:25 rangi heh
21:25 druthb koha-cooking++
21:25 gmcharlt jcamins: that sounds positively torturous
21:25 gmcharlt all of those /promises/ of delcious food
21:25 cait mmh cookies!
21:25 gmcharlt but nothing in real life
21:25 gmcharlt ;)
21:25 jcamins I've started deliving holiday cookies to the building staff.
21:26 cait maybe we should keep #koha for the cookies, and split off a dev chat :)
21:26 gmcharlt @quote add <cait> maybe we should keep #koha for the cookies, and split off a dev chat :)
21:26 huginn gmcharlt: The operation succeeded.  Quote #285 added.
21:26 cait heh
21:26 jcamins gmcharlt: so there are cookies in real life for some people, at least!
21:26 jcamins This is what you get for moving to Seattle instead of NYC.
21:27 gmcharlt jcamins: indeed; downside to every decision
