04:47 Irma yesan Creating good reports in Koha is well worth the time and effort. I always advise our clients to think clearly on what they wish to report on, in which order the information should be displayed, who the readers of the reports are etc.

10:07 mohah oh, why does it keep signing me out?
10:07 mtj pass, sometimes the interwebs get bouncy :)
10:08 mohah anyway, i would appreciate your help very much, i have been trying since yesterday and still no success
10:08 mtj whats your problem moha?
10:09 mohah I installed koha 3.8, created a new library, set it to default, created a new patron category but i can not add new patrons
10:09 mohah i don't have the new patron tab
10:09 mtj the first thing i do is watch the koha error log, for errors..
10:10 mtj does your user have enough permissions to create a new user?
10:10 mtj try logging in as the koha database/superuser
10:11 mtj … can u add a new user then?
10:12 moha joined #koha
10:13 mtj mohah, did you get my advice before? ^^
10:13 moha i am using the database user. created after koha-create --create-db
10:13 moha from the file /etc/koha/sites/sitename/koha-conf.xml
10:14 mtj[…]3-02-20#i_1189355
10:15 mtj you are logging into koha with the koha database user, yes?

10:18 mtj ok… you are probably missing rows in your 'categories' table

10:32 mtj any errors in your browser's console?
10:32 mtj cant find yui-button-blah  file, etc...
10:32 mtj excuse?
10:32 wahanui mtj: Root nameservers are out of sync
10:32 mo joined #koha
10:32 mo how can i check for errors?
10:32 mtj hmm, something a little more topical wahanui
10:33 mtj depends on yr browser and os
10:33 mo firefox, ubuntu
10:34 mtj i use firebug's console in firefox, for errors
10:34 moh joined #koha
10:35 mtj my 2 other suggestions are….
10:36 mtj 1/ drop/create a new koha db, and do a quick test re-install of a db, with all optional data
10:36 mtj (backup 1st , of course)
10:37 mtj 2/ watch (tail -f ) your apache/koha log file , for errors when hitting that 'patrons' webpage

14:26 jcamins Up to you.
14:26 tcohen :-P
14:27 jcamins I mostly only have opinions on A) things my clients use, B) things that are very central to the system, and C) things that I use.
14:27 tcohen ok
14:27 oleonard It is a difficult workflow problem. Should we allow the user to save a report with a non-existent authorized value on the assumption that they will create one later? Or should we force them to leave reports creation and create their authorized value first?
14:28 oleonard In one case we trust that they will do something we're not requiring they do. In the other case we force them to abandon something they may have worked on.
14:28 oleonard I think we have to default to trusting them rather than defaulting to making them mad.

17:05 oleonard Call numbers on on the list view in the OPAC
17:05 oleonard on on -> *are* on
17:06 oleonard Oh I see, there isn't an "add to cart" link at the top of a list view you mean?
17:07 cait oh,no I think that was staff... actually not sure
17:07 cait they wanted to be able to create a list easily
17:07 cait with callnumbers
17:07 cait but the cart thing was on opac
17:07 cait my idea was to just add all the items from the list to the cart, because the callnumber shows there
17:07 cait that's why I noticed oyu can't bulk add there to the cart
17:07 cait yep
17:07 cait but on each individual entry there is

19:04 maximep was there ever a discussion about just doing a mega patch reformating all the code to be spaces instead of tabs ?
19:04 maximep or better, just reformat everything following the coding style in the wiki

19:06 maximep ah, i see
19:06 maximep too bad we didnt do it when we moved to tt :/
19:06 rangi but i love it when people fix the formatting of whatever they are touching
19:06 rangi maximep: that actually only touched a very small amount of perl
19:07 jcamins maximep: the problem is that the style guidelines are more about Perl than the templates, and the TT transition involved ve... yes, exactly.
19:07 maximep ah, good point
19:07 rangi actually bgkriegel has been good about fix tabs etc when he signs off
19:08 rangi the koha-qa tools will catch any stuff that is wrong in the commit
19:08 jcamins Yeah, bgkriegel's doing amazing signoffs.
19:08 jcamins bgkriegel++
19:08 rangi often a commit moves something a line down and then the qa tools notice hey that line has tabs
19:09 maximep nice
19:09 rangi so the person writing the patch gets blamed hehe, but blame doesnt really matter if it means the tab is fixed :)
19:09 maximep id rather have my patch rejected multiple times because of style
19:09 maximep than doing something wrong
19:09 rangi exactly
19:10 * oleonard has a pre-commit hook that checks for whitespace problems in changed lines
19:10 rangi actually i learnt a trick
19:10 rangi which would mean we could do a mass tidy
19:11 maximep I turn off all my whitespace and tidy stuff when I work in koha :/
19:11 maximep whitespace merge conflicts are the worst
19:11 jcamins Whitespace merge conflicts?
19:11 wahanui Whitespace merge conflicts are the worst

19:13 rangi yep
19:13 rangi lemme just test
19:13 maximep I should just add -w to everything
19:14 maximep git merge -w would fix my merge conflicts
19:14 rangi git blame
19:14 wahanui git blame is, like, handy, but it's just one tool in our debugging arsenal
19:14 rangi 28d9f13c (Chris Cormack 2013-02-21 08:11:33 +1300  1)   #!/usr/bin/perl

19:15 rangi that was a trailing tab, then a tab to a space
19:15 rangi so yep
19:16 rangi we could totally perltidy a file (as a sep commit)
19:16 rangi and would ignore whitepace

22:36 rangi yep, theyd have to login the old fashioned way
22:36 wizzyrea cool
22:37 wizzyrea i guess the answer to the first question is, you can't accidentally get into the wrong account using persona, can you?
22:37 rangi only if that person has the email address you are logging into persona with
22:37 rangi so yes if you got into someones account set the email to yours
22:38 rangi then you could login to theirs
22:38 rangi but since you were already in there before that
22:38 wizzyrea or the library staff were
22:38 rangi yep
22:38 rangi if library staff go round assiging your email to the wrong ppl
22:38 wizzyrea or multiple people
22:38 rangi yep
22:39 rangi itd have to be the one that you have access to
22:39 rangi ie persona verifies your email
22:39 rangi and youd be getting all their overdue emails etc too
22:39 wizzyrea right of course.
22:39 rangi so, short answer persona wont protect you from crazy library staff :)
22:40 wizzyrea ok hear me out - maybe a patron should be able to select the email field to use for persona
22:40 rangi yep thats a possible future enhancement
22:40 wizzyrea because it might be different from the one they want to receive notices from
22:40 wizzyrea anyway yes, probably a future enhancement
22:40 rangi (you can associate multiple emails addesses to your persona account)
22:41 rangi and pick the one you want to login to koha with
22:41 wizzyrea ohhhh cool.
22:41 rangi thats what i was just fixing
22:41 wizzyrea i really ought to get one of those:P
22:41 rangi handling when you login to persona with an email not in koha :)

22:42 alohabot Hi mib_ardh24, Welcome to #koha. Feel free to use the '/nick yourname' command to choose a different name. alohabot, wahanui, and huginn are bots. If you need any help, just ask - there's usually someone around to help :)
22:42 jcamins wizzyrea: just make sure not to forget your password.
22:43 wizzyrea you mean persona?
22:43 drojf rangi: what is it supposed to do in the last case?
22:43 rangi now its just going to not loop continuously trying to log you in
22:43 rangi but instead gives you a nice message saying
22:44 rangi Couldn't log you in, perhaps your emails don't match (or words to taht effect)

22:45 rgbv hi all
22:45 wizzyrea hi
22:46 jatara joined #koha
22:46 drojf rangi: ah, alright then. i was wondering if some magic was supposed to happen to still log in. i was just thinking how that will work with the email encryption if the address is not in koha *looks at "unfinished projects i got no time for"-pile*
22:46 mdavis joined #koha
22:47 rangi :)
22:47 rangi nope if it doesnt match, you have to either login with one that does, or do it the old way
22:47 jatara Got a quick question...I was wondering if there was any reason not to use batch delete with weeding items as opposing to withdrawing books?
22:47 rgbv I've noticed some weird behavior in koha since upgrading the server this morning
22:47 rangi hmm?
22:48 wizzyrea jatara- that is entirely a matter of library policy
22:48 wizzyrea there is no technical reason to do it one way or the other
22:48 drojf rgbv: what does it do?
22:48 drojf or, not do?
22:49 jatara What are the pros and cons of either option?
22:49 wizzyrea withdrawn items will still show in the catalog, deleted ones won't
22:49 wizzyrea you can easily restore a withdrawn item
22:49 wizzyrea deleted ones are harder.
22:50 wizzyrea (easier to just re--add it )
22:50 wizzyrea you can do reports on both, so that's not an issue
22:50 rgbv opac searches are not resolving ' that are pasted in they give this: ../’s which gives a nasty error page rather than ../'s
22:50 jatara you can do a report on deleted items? how?
22:51 jcamins rgbv: is it telling you that it can't load a module?
22:51 wizzyrea select (stuff) from deleteditems
22:51 wizzyrea schema
22:51 wizzyrea schema?
22:51 wahanui schema is tracked in git. or found at
22:51 wizzyrea http://schema.koha-community.o[…]les/deletedbiblio
22:52 rgbv it gives this error: Technical Information (for support personnel)      Error Code: 500 Internal Server Error. The request was rejected by the HTTP filter. Contact the server administrator. (12217)
22:52 wizzyrea http://schema.koha-community.o[…]deleteditems.html
22:53 jatara i didn't know you could run a report on deleted items, so even when "deleted," they're not good for good?
22:53 rangi rgbv: that doesn't sound like a Koha error, is there a proxy between you and Koha?
22:53 drojf rgbv: are you the server administrator?
22:53 jatara gone for good
22:53 rangi rgbv: and what version of koha is it?
22:53 wizzyrea I think it doesn't keep every little thing
22:53 wizzyrea but there's nowhere in the interface to view deleted items
22:53 rangi it keeps the full record, and there used to be an interface
22:54 rangi it got killed version 3.0
22:54 wizzyrea (anymore)
22:54 rangi by the demonspawn
22:54 * wizzyrea sighs
22:54 rangi ill resurrect it one day
22:54 rgbv @ waitaki for better or worse I administer the server
22:54 rangi ahh hey chris
22:55 rangi that sounds like the proxy between you and koha throwing that error
22:55 rangi the cause is the lovely microsoft ’ vs '
22:55 rangi you could look at the the error logs in
22:56 jatara are there any reasons why a library would prefer a withdraw over a batch delete?
22:56 wizzyrea heh, I can't answer that for you
22:56 rangi /var/log/koha/waitaki/
22:56 wizzyrea @quote get 123
22:56 huginn wizzyrea: Quote #123: "rangi: #thingsihavelearnt if there is a mad scheme a library somewhere will be doing it ... except madder" (added by wizzyrea at 09:20 PM, March 30, 2011)
22:56 wahanui
22:56 jcamins jatara: yes, it offers a better way of tracking popularity.
22:56 rgbv hi Chris :), cheers I'll look at the log
22:57 jatara how so?
22:57 wizzyrea ...if you are using that
22:57 jcamins Patrons can see "okay, they used to have fifteen copies, now they have five... I guess this is the best-seller from fifteen years ago."
22:57 wizzyrea i have never once heard a patron say anything like that
22:57 jcamins wizzyrea: nor have I.
22:57 wizzyrea more likely they would say "why do you list 15 items if you only have 5"
22:58 jcamins wizzyrea: but that is why my college library listed withdrawn items.
22:58 wizzyrea well that is insane.
22:58 wizzyrea sorry. mad scheme.
22:58 jcamins Your point? :P
22:58 dcook rangi: Is the persona concept similar or the same to openID? A friend of mine mentioned it as a viable possibility yesterday. I'm not super knowledgeable about authentication, but she couldn't seem to think of why openID wouldn't work with Koha
22:58 jcamins dcook: very similar, except with less XSS.
22:59 rangi rgbv: from what i can tell its not reaching the koha server being blocked by IIS before it can get there
22:59 rangi but the logs would confirm that guess
22:59 jcamins At least, I think that was what the Persona site said.
22:59 jatara so if an item is deleted via batch delete, we still keep a record of it (sorta), but that record is not easily retrieved, corect?
22:59 dcook hehe
22:59 wizzyrea right
22:59 jcamins Right.
23:00 dcook jcamins: I've always been skeptical of openID (although I didn't know it as openID at the time), although I suppose it's always difficult to gauge the reliability of the message of a competing technology
23:00 BigRig joined #koha
23:01 drojf good night #koha
23:01 jatara so when an item is "deleted" are there any aspects of that record that are permanently gone?
23:01 rgbv rangi: what do I need to look for in the logs? (I have'nt much xp with them)
23:01 jcamins Date last edited, maybe.
23:01 rangi rgbv: ahh its definitely not getting to koha
23:01 wizzyrea I'm not sure about that
23:01 rangi rgbv: run
23:01 jcamins But actually, I'm not even sure it gets replaced by the deleted date.
23:02 rangi tail -f /var/log/koha/waitaki/opac-access.log
23:02 jcamins Other than that, everything stays.
23:02 rangi and then hit the page
23:02 rangi[…]=Mother%E2%80%99s
23:02 rangi you will notice nothing gets to koha
23:02 rangi if you hit[…]
23:02 rangi otoh
23:02 rangi you will see entries appear in the log
23:03 wizzyrea[…]'s
23:03 wizzyrea works for me ^.^
23:03 jcamins rangi: ... IIS can't handle apostrophes?
23:03 rangi jcamins: only windows ones it appears
23:03 wizzyrea can't handle not %27 apostrophes
23:03 rangi ' is fine ’ isnt
23:04 wizzyrea maaadness
23:04 rangi rgbv: so its being blocked before getting to koha
23:04 rangi rgbv: i hope that makes sense and/or is helpful :)
23:05 rgbv cheers, thats most helpful, I'll get them to set the apostrophes free
23:06 rangi cool
23:06 wizzyrea fly little apostrophes! fly!
23:06 rgbv :)

23:13 jcamins I just realized something... Persona doesn't work with non-public servers, does it?
23:13 rangi how do you mean?
23:13 rangi my server i developed it on?
23:13 jcamins Right.
23:13 rangi yeah it does
23:14 jcamins Oh, good!
23:14 wizzyrea you mean "not internet connected"
23:14 rangi as long as that server can talk to the internet that is
23:14 wizzyrea perhaps?
23:14 jcamins But... how?
23:14 jcamins No, I meant behind a firewall.
23:14 rangi if the server cant verify an assertion with a persona server
23:14 jcamins I thought it had some sort of callback.
23:14 rangi then no it wont work
23:14 rangi nope
23:15 jcamins I didn't look at the code yet since I couldn't figure out how to get it working.
23:15 rangi what happens is the client logs in
23:15 rangi to persona
23:15 jcamins And the commit message mentioned a /svc/login call.
23:15 rangi yep thats local
23:15 jcamins Ohhh.
23:15 jcamins Very cool!
23:15 rangi there is an /opac/svc/login
23:15 rangi script created for this
23:16 rangi however that script has to verify the assertion given to it by the client
23:16 rangi with a persona server somewhere, in this case the main one
23:16 jcamins Right, but the Persona server isn't connecting to /opac/svc/login, it's /opac/svc/login making the connection to Persona.
23:16 rangi right
23:16 jcamins Awesome!
23:16 wahanui That'll be $1 for the awesome jar, jcamins
23:16 jcamins lol
23:17 * dcook chuckles

23:27 jcamins I have one stick of butter and cocoa powder, and would like to bake something dessert-like with it.
23:27 jcamins Suggestions?
23:29 jcamins[…]-oatmeal-cookies/ <-- I could make that and add a few tablespoons of avocado...
23:29 jcamins AVOCADO!!!!
23:29 jcamins Butter problem = a thing of the past
23:30 jcamins What is with this trend of using cake mix instead of actual ingredients?
23:34 dcook jcamins: By trend, do you mean the past 20-30 years? :p
23:35 dcook Admittedly, I've often been a mix/pre-made person,  but my partner is giving me flak, so b ack to actual ingredients we go!
23:36 jcamins dcook: no, this is more recent.
23:36 jcamins It used to be that you used cake mix for, well, cake.
23:36 dcook As opposed to?
23:36 jcamins Now there are "three ingredient" recipes for avocado cookies that call for "avocados, milk, and cake mix."
23:36 jcamins wtf?
23:37 dcook O_o
23:37 dcook I see what you're saying now
23:37 dcook P.S. avocado cookies? I'm intrigued.
23:37 dcook P.P.S. are avocados ridiculously expensive in the US as well?
23:38 jcamins Yes they are.
23:38 jcamins I found these: http://dairyfreecooking.about.[…]cado-Brownies.htm
23:38 jcamins However, I am simply going to replace a stick of butter with an avocado.
23:39 dcook Oooo that looks good
23:39 dcook My partner is vegan and I'm increasingly so myself, so always good to see non-dairy recipes
23:48 bgkriegel jcamins: testing bug 5608. Perlcritic complains about a require statement, but there are lots of scripts that also fails (or not but use same code). What to do?
23:48 huginn Bug[…]w_bug.cgi?id=5608 enhancement, P5 - low, ---, mdhafen, Needs Signoff , Tool to move MARC21 series info to 490 tag
23:53 jcamins Ignore the perlcritic complaint.
23:54 dcook Intriguing...
23:54 jcamins The perlcriticrc file in the Koha repo tells perlcritic to ignore it.
23:55 bgkriegel mm, i'm using koha-qa and percritic file
23:55 bgkriegel in my home
23:56 bgkriegel ok, ignore :)
23:56 dcook ...that bug looks weird
23:56 dcook Maybe it's just the wording
