00:16 rangi afternoon

00:42 mib_wz9t1u wow, this is cool. i am looking for help installing koha on windows 7. i downloaded the .zip file, but am not sure which steps to take next
00:45 rangi the windows version is really really really old, and totally unsupported
00:45 rangi its probably best if you have to install it on windows to run it under vmware (or something similar) as a virtual machine
00:48 mib_wz9t1u ok, not sure what that is, perhaps too complicated for me. i also tried to install via ubuntu, but i know nothing about linux, so that proved to be too complicated for me as well. it looked liked via windows would be easier, with loss of functionality of z3950, but i was willing to forego, just to experiment
00:50 eythian windows is not likely to be easier.
00:50 mib_wz9t1u ok, well i appreciate the info, thank you
00:50 jcamins Definitely won't be easier.
00:51 jcamins Much, much harder.
00:51 jcamins Because no one will be able to help you at all.
00:53 mib_wz9t1u guess I'll just have to learn more about linux then
00:54 mib_wz9t1u i was following the instructions on http://everydaytechy.blogspot.[…]n-ubuntu-910.html
00:55 mib_wz9t1u anyone know of anything better for a true beginner?
00:56 jcamins mib_wz9t1u: yes, follow the current instructions, not instructions that are several years old and for a different version of Koha.
00:57 jcamins packages?
00:57 wahanui packages is at http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Debian
00:57 jcamins ^^ use that
00:57 rangi mib_wz9t1u: the INSTALL.debian or INSTALL.ubuntu file that comes with koha, or using the packages
00:57 jcamins Use the packages.
00:58 eythian , luke.
01:04 mib_wz9t1u ok, i looked at this page once, i will look again, i was not sure about debian vs. ubuntu at the time
01:04 mib_wz9t1u thanks e1

08:29 libttc hi wondering if anyone is aware of how to get koha backup on things such as the catalog
08:35 cait first question?
08:35 wahanui "What are you trying to do?"  "What is the goal?" or "What problem are you experiencing?"
08:36 cait libttc: if you want to do backups for your installation you can dump the database - it has all information and you can rebuild the zebra indexes. If you have local changes, you might want to backup more files.

08:55 cait hm, what's the difference?
08:55 Oak when we were in school, we were given homework by our teachers.

08:57 libttc well there is the need to backup all the catalog information just in case things do not go as expected
08:57 cait libttc: did you see what I wrote earlier? about dumping the database?
08:57 libttc is there a way of backing up the data in the catalog?

08:59 libttc yes i have tried the dumping but i noticed that it is only getting the database structure and the main settings, not the data in the db as in stuff such as books entered.
09:00 slef libttc: the books should be in the biblio, items and biblioitems tables.
09:00 cait_afk if you do a correct dump, all data will be in there
09:00 cait_afk not only the structure
09:00 cait_afk now really afk :)

13:10 Barrc uh oh.......
13:11 jcamins I won't be there, but the location where it is has very little parking.
13:11 Barrc why? is there nowhere near the university for driving folk?
13:12 jcamins I'm pretty sure the lot near Teviot isn't open to the public.
13:14 Barrc Thanks - that puts me in a ticky spot so!!, I'll need to park and ride somewhere so!
13:18 cait_afk perhaps there are park and ride options?
13:18 cait_afk Barrc: where are you from?
13:19 jcamins Barrc: how far are you willing to walk?
13:19 jcamins I'm operating under the assumption that the reason you're planning on driving is that mobility is a challenge.
13:20 jcamins There's parking at Buccleuch (sp?) which was open to the public.
13:21 jcamins You should also check with mle. It could be that he's able to get you a parking permit.
13:22 jcamins I am basing my information on what I saw from being a student.

16:15 vfernandes hi guys...
16:17 chris_n jcamins++ #for your sandbox extension ideas
16:17 chris_n that would dramatically lower the entry level for bug signoff
16:17 jcamins chris_n: yeah.
16:20 paul_p chris_n = that would, but only once the new DB update system is live. Otherwise, many "patch does not apply" will reduce the signoff possibilities
16:21 paul_p guys & women, I've pushed the passed QA pile, and QAed most of patches needing QA (except a few very large one & 3 BibLibre ones), it's time to go back home for me !!!
16:21 jcamins paul_p: right now it's not really possible to try testing a new indexing configuration.
16:21 jcamins As I understand.
16:21 paul_p jcamins you're right.

16:21 cait_afk paul_p: have a nice evening :)
16:21 paul_p (and that will be *very* tricky to change that I fear !)
16:21 jcamins Even cooler would be setting it up so that we could test it in parallel: old configuration and new configuration.
16:22 jcamins It will be tricky, but not impossible. :)
16:22 jcamins I learned how to do it for testing the UNIMARC DOM indexing.
16:22 cait_afk nothing really is impossible... right? :)

18:16 alaquerre Hi everyone.  General question.   We curently do have a lot of "local" changes and I am wondering what is the best way to do version upgrade?  Should we do : 3.6.0 --> 3.8.1 ?  Or 3.6.0 --> 3.6.5 --> 3.8.1 ?
18:17 jcamins alaquerre: it doesn't matter.
18:17 jcamins Upgrading is going to be staggeringly painful regardless.
18:17 jcamins Going from 3.6.0-3.8.1 will be faster, though.
18:17 alaquerre ok that's was my question ;-) then ...
18:18 jcamins alaquerre: usually upgrades aren't painful, of course, but with all your customizations, you're going to basically be redoing everything you did when you first moved to Koha.
18:18 jcamins This is why "waiting until it's ready" is always a bad idea.
18:19 jcamins Either get it ready immediately, or do without significant local changes, is my philosophy.
18:21 alaquerre We want to push 80% of our local change to the community and then start to be "very clean"...
18:21 alaquerre We hope that some of our upgrade will be taken into consideration.
18:22 jcamins alaquerre: if you contribute code (and respond to feedback), anything others find useful will make it into Koha.
18:22 alaquerre okay thanks again jcamins!
18:22 jcamins (but remember it won't be incorporated into a release until 3.10 at the earliest)
18:24 alaquerre I know :-)  That's why we will start doing quick release cycle...  Doing the initial migration, we try to fix everything quickly without sharing it since it's was time consumming... But I find it much more time consuming now ...
18:24 jcamins Yup. And it'll only get worse and worse.
18:25 alaquerre So you should see couple of new fix/feature from Libeo sponsored by CCSR...
18:25 alaquerre Thanks again.
18:25 jcamins There are a couple waiting for feedback from Libeo.
18:26 alaquerre Okay I will do the follow up with them :-)
18:42 Oak jcamins, can we install 3.6.5 on Debian using a command like apt-get install koha-common? <-- that will install 3.8.1, but what if we want to install 3.6.5 with all the dependencies?

20:33 chris_n 36 requests  ❘  123.05KB transferred  ❘  14.21s (onload: 14.21s, DOMContentLoaded: 13.96s)
20:33 jcamins But I'd rather do proper caching in Koha.
20:33 chris_n load addbooks.pl?q=history
20:33 * chris_n wonders what's wrong
20:33 jcamins chris_n: do you use NYTProf?
20:34 chris_n not atm
20:34 jcamins You should.
20:34 jcamins Makes it easy for you to see what happened when you get something like that.
20:34 rangi ohh all my 4330 got pushed yay, one step closer to being in debian proper, i still have about 100 files to fix copyright headers on, but getting there
20:34 jcamins Requires two lines:
20:35 jcamins SetEnv NYTPROF "file=/tmp/nytprof.out"
20:35 jcamins SetEnv PERL5OPT "-d:NYTProf"
20:35 jcamins If you want to automatically put it in a subdir, you can also add: Alias /nytprof/ "/tmp/nytprof/"
20:36 jcamins Then when you're testing something and run into a problem, you can just run: cd /tmp && nytprofhtml
20:36 chris_n so does it generate html output or text or?
20:36 jcamins nytprofhtml turns the log into HTML.
20:36 chris_n cool
20:36 jcamins That's how I figured out that SearchAuthorities was broken.
20:41 chris_n jcamins: is stuff like "No file line range data for sub foo" commong?
20:41 chris_n common even
20:41 jcamins chris_n: yeah, it has something to do with autoload.
20:42 chris_n k... its processing the log file now
20:42 jcamins My rule of thumb is that anything getting loaded in a compiled form is something I don't have any control over anyway.
20:44 chris_n hmm
20:44 chris_n seems to be hung up
20:44 jcamins chris_n: it can take a *loong* time.
20:45 chris_n ahh
20:45 jcamins Depends how much code was run.
20:47 jenkins_koha Starting build #30 for job Koha_3.8.x (previous build: SUCCESS)
20:47 chris_n jcamins: so I end up with a directory full of html files
20:47 chris_n and get koha 404 messages when attempting to access them.... :-(
20:48 jcamins chris_n: and you added the alias?
20:49 chris_n yes, and can browse the directory
20:49 jcamins That's weird!
20:49 chris_n om
20:49 chris_n I ran it as root
20:49 chris_n is that bad?
20:49 jcamins Hm.
20:49 jcamins I always run it as my Koha user.
20:50 chris_n no joy
20:50 chris_n chown to www-data did not help
20:50 chris_n ahh
20:51 rangi bug 7794
20:51 huginn` Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]w_bug.cgi?id=7794 enhancement, P5 - low, ---, stephane.delaune, Pushed to Master , redefine the field id as PRIMARY KEY of sessions
20:51 rangi im leaning towards holding that over to 3.10
20:51 chris_n jcamins: trailing slash gotcha
20:51 jcamins chris_n: ah, yeah, that'll do it.
20:52 jcamins rangi: makes sense to me.
20:52 rangi since it doesnt win us anything significant, and potentially might break something
20:52 chris_n rangi: +1
20:52 rangi cool will do
20:53 chris_n ouch
20:53 chris_n Profile of /home/koha/koha.prod/cataloguing/addbooks.pl for 23.9s, executing 838930 statements and 207556 subroutine calls in 305 source files and 976 string evals.
20:53 jcamins Bother.
20:53 chris_n ~24 seconds
20:53 jcamins Speaking of trailing slash gotchas.
20:53 rangi bug 7729 the same
20:53 huginn` Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]w_bug.cgi?id=7729 enhancement, P5 - low, ---, mjr, Needs Signoff , svc API should allow modification of items
20:53 chris_n blisteringly slow
20:53 chris_n rangi: agree
20:53 jcamins I just discovered that I had a slash extra (or too few) in my rsync and my apt repo wasn't updated properly.
20:55 chris_n looks like the templating stuff takes forever
20:55 pastebot "chris_n" at 127.0.0.1 pasted "Top 15 Subroutines — ordered" (19 lines) at http://paste.koha-community.org/416
20:56 chris_n any thoughts on what direction to look?
20:56 jcamins I have no idea what Storable is even doing there.
20:57 jcamins I'm also unclear why it's running gunzip.
20:58 chris_n # spent 2.86s within Storable::mretrieve which was called 48 times, avg 59.5ms/call:
20:58 chris_n # 48 times (2.86s+0s) by Storable::thaw at line 415 of Storable.pm, avg 59.5ms/call
20:58 chris_n glub, glub :-P
20:58 jcamins Wait.
20:59 jcamins Oh, never mind.
20:59 jcamins The math does add up.
20:59 jcamins It's milliseconds not nanoseconds.
20:59 * chris_n wonders just what's being passed in to thaw()
20:59 chris_n 41148214ms        my ($frozen) = @_;
21:00 jcamins I'm profiling it on my system to see what I see.
21:00 chris_n or if its just freezing things so hard that it takes a long time to thaw them back out... ;-)
21:00 jcamins It's a bit faster.
21:02 jcamins The results are nothing like that.
21:02 jcamins Clear your sessions?
21:02 chris_n will try
21:03 jcamins I spend 301 microseconds in mretrieve.
21:03 chris_n oo
21:03 chris_n look at this monstrosity
21:03 chris_n mysql> SELECT count(*) FROM sessions;
21:03 chris_n +----------+
21:03 chris_n | count(*) |
21:03 chris_n +----------+
21:03 chris_n |   213750 |
21:03 chris_n +----------+
21:04 chris_n 1 row in set (3.82 sec)
21:04 jcamins Memcached.
21:04 wahanui i think memcached is running, but I dunno it Koha uses it.
21:04 jcamins It's the way to go. :P
21:04 chris_n its running :-)
21:04 chris_n do I need to clear the ntyprof log each time?
21:04 jcamins No, just refresh and run nytprofhtml again.
21:05 jcamins The configuration I suggested is a bit brittle because it will only keep the log for the last page load, but I find it works well enough for me.
21:05 chris_n well, its running
21:06 chris_n there was not much perceptible change in load time
21:06 chris_n jcamins: it will probably be fine for my use too
21:07 chris_n very nice tool
21:07 chris_n entirely too much red, though
21:09 rangi http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/
21:09 rangi check out the top right

21:12 chris_n nice!
21:12 gaetan_B oooh
21:12 gaetan_B ha :)
21:13 chris_n too bad it won't automagically translate comments ;-)
21:13 cait or our statuses
21:13 rangi that would be pretty cool :)
21:13 cait google translate :)
21:13 rangi but no, its static templates, like we do for koha

21:14 cait he is faster than oleonard even
21:17 cait how is the go live going?
21:18 * chris_n is glad there are no users around :(
21:18 chris_n data is ok
21:18 chris_n but it serves pages as slow as chrome rusts
21:18 cait that sounds painful
21:19 cait and you were not able to locate the problem yet?
21:19 cait newer versions were reported to be faster
21:19 chris_n maybe resources?
21:19 chris_n this is a single core/single cpu 1.2GHz w/1G ram
21:19 chris_n but I don't thing it should be *that* slow
21:20 chris_n I can eat an entire chocolate chip cookie while the search page loads
21:20 cait oh
21:20 cait hand over the cookies then :)
21:21 cait so it will get faster
21:21 chris_n addbooks.pl appears to consume 87% of the cpu cycles, so maybe it is resources
21:21 * chris_n heads home
21:22 chris_n this is a tomorrow problem :-P
21:22 cait good luck tomorrow :)
21:22 cait maybe you dream the solutoin
21:22 chris_n lol!
21:23 chris_n more likely dream about eating more cookies :)
21:23 cait heh
21:24 cait I have the cookies now - dream the solution!
21:27 jcamins Yikes. That's a pretty dinky little server.
