04:19 CGI318 richard have u tried 3.0.0? it has bugs?
04:20 richard ah you've caught me out - always asked someone else to do the installing
04:20 richard but 3.0.6 would be the one you would want to install anyway
04:25 CGI318 richard are u using koha?

07:59 chris hi kf
07:59 kf hi chris
07:59 kf I see a strange thing in our koha installations: all users have the same dateexpiry - and I dont know how that happened
08:00 kf I thought it was an import error first, but this library entered all borrowers manually
08:00 kf over weeks
08:01 chris that is very strange
08:02 chris there isnt some systempreference that controls that?
08:03 kf not that I know of, when I enter a new patron the date is calculated correct
08:03 chris hmm
08:04 chris is something changing them?
08:04 kf perhaps a bug? searching the bug database now, nothing found so far
08:04 kf must be
08:04 kf perhaps a job?
08:04 kf cron job
08:04 chris yeah
08:04 chris that would be my next suspect
08:04 * chris looks
08:06 chris nothing obvious
08:07 kf same in our third installation
08:07 chris does you borrowers table have a last_modified column?
08:07 kf 2011-08-31 in our third installation, 2011-02-26 in second
08:08 kf I see no timestamp field
08:09 chris darn, we used to have that in 2.2 i think it fell out before 3.0, i kept it when i upgraded hlt ... cos its handy
08:09 chris whats the registration date for them?
08:09 chris its not the same for all of them?
08:10 jransom joined #koha
08:11 kf let me check
08:14 kf ok, different results from different databases, dateenrolled and dateexpiry are different in the database, where all borrowers expire on the same date
08:15 kf I see what I already new, they entered about 10 borrowers each day
08:15 kf and all have the same expiry date now
08:17 * kf is confused
08:19 kf oh, I think I have an idea, let me test
08:20 kf ok, I updated all borrowers, because we forgot to configure the message settings for borrowercategories
08:21 kf but this should not change the expiry date
08:21 kf when you update the message preferences from the detail page the expiry date changes
08:21 kf I saw it in the logs and remembered, I opened all borrowers and checked hold filed message
08:22 kf same for the first installation that told me about the problem, because I was not able to figure out how to do it with sql
08:22 jransom (waves at kf while she mumbles away to herself :)

08:25 kf but makes me happy to know how it happened!

12:22 Nate joined #koha
12:22 owen kmkale: I think you'll find that some displays become a little over-loaded with information when you have too many branches (or too many items).
12:23 owen jwagner: Sure
12:23 jwagner Similar to the one I was snarling about yesterday, but on staff side.  In staff request.tmpl, I need to insert some text before the header line that starts Place a hold on
12:24 jwagner I can't find anything existing to hook into.  I added an empty div tag right before that, which worked fine -- I could then jquery my text into place.  But I didn't know if I was missing anything.
12:24 * jwagner swears someday I'm going to go through the whole staff side & add divs to every line :-(
12:25 kmkale on call
12:26 kf jawagner: better use spans ;)
12:26 jwagner them too!
12:26 jwagner My sites have a positive genius for wanting to add text in the oddest places....
12:26 owen The correct approach is to add ID attributes to existing structures which are semantically unique
12:27 jwagner But there don't appear to be any existing structures in that area, that I can see. It's just text
12:28 owen I'm talking about future efforts to add to the template.
12:29 jwagner :-)
12:31 owen $("h1:contains('Place a hold on')").before("<p>Hey you</p>");
12:31 kmkale owen: thanks.
12:32 jwagner owen++ THANKS!  One less tiny patch to have to do!
12:33 hdl_laptop joined #koha
12:33 jwagner So you can search for & hook to header codes like <h1>? That's a very useful trick indeed.
12:34 owen The ":contains()" technique is very flexible, but I suspect it's also slow, since for each page render the browser is parsing the entire DOM for H1, then parsing all the H1s for your text
12:35 owen I don't know at what point that kind of activity causes a drag on the browser.
12:36 owen If only custom JS could be included on a page-by-page basis
12:37 jwagner In this case, since there's probably a lot of <h1> codes, it might be as bad a drag as it gets.
12:39 jwagner (I didn't notice anything, but I wasn't especially watching either...)

12:40 owen Man I am so sick of Koha telling me I can't place holds.
12:40 jwagner Policies? or bugs?
12:41 owen I've got  a default rule set up specifying 5 holds allowed.
12:41 owen Placing a hold for a user with 3 holds, an available item
12:41 nengard there seem to be a bunch of holds issues lately
12:42 nengard what was introduced into the code that is screwing with holds?
12:42 owen And of course the template doesn't tell me *why* I can't place the hold >:(

12:48 ColinC Hey
12:48 owen My hold is not being blocked by any of the conditions checked by the template: maxreserves, alreadyreserved, none_available
12:49 owen So what condition is *not* being checked by the template?
12:49 jwagner owen, what code level?
12:49 jwagner Morning, ColinC
12:50 owen jwagner: I've only looked at the template so far, I don't know where those conditions are generated
12:50 ColinC Afternoon Jane
12:50 jwagner no, I meant are you on current head or what?
12:52 owen head
12:54 jwagner Where is the limit of 5 set? in circ rule, or maxreserves syspref?
12:55 owen Circ rule
12:56 owen maxreserves is empty
12:57 * jwagner scratches head
12:58 jwagner Is there another rule that limits to 3 holds, that might be overriding in some way?
12:59 owen there's no rule for that patron category which would override the limit, and there's no default rule set for the branch I'm in
13:00 owen So as far as I can tell the rule for the default patron category and the default branch should be in effect
13:00 owen Or does the default branch rule not work?
13:01 owen I guess that answers my question--cloning the default rules to my logged-in branch makes the warning go away.
13:01 owen Default branch rule no workie.
13:05 jwagner I've run into that before -- the default level rules just don't work.
13:06 owen I can't find a bug report for it. Am I just not seeing it?
13:07 kf I never use default rules

13:09 nengard can someone remind me of the diff between the items table and the biblioitems table>
13:09 nengard ?
13:09 jwagner umm, items is real and useful, while biblioitems is archaic and a royal pain?  (not prejudiced or anything....)
13:09 kf biblioitems has title level information I think
13:10 kf but I like jwagners explanation :)
13:10 kf biblio and biblioitems have title level inforamtion from marc21, I think marcxml is also in bibliotiems

13:11 nengard he says it's going away
13:11 jwagner nengard, speed the day thereof!
13:11 owen nengard: biblioitems was used long ago for the pseudo-FRBR structure of Koha 1.x
13:12 owen It allowed the biblio table to contain information that was truly title-specific, independent of media, edition, etc.
13:14 nengard thanks guys

13:34 CGI736 Please forgive me if this has been asked 20,000 times, but I just haven't found the answer, yet, and it has gotten to the point where the time spent searching is taking hours of otherwise-productive time away from me.  The question: How does one (especially when initially cataloguing all the library's books) use the UPC (especially with a barcode scanner) to obtain information about the books?  The Z39.50 search doesn't seem to ha
13:35 kf I think for newer books with isbn-13 you can scan the upc (barcode on book?) to isbn
13:35 kf but perhaps someone else knows better, I have never tried that
13:36 ColinC Even before isbn-13 was in wide use the 13 character version of the original isbn was being used
13:37 kf so you just have to delete the first numbers?
13:37 kf ah, but the last number differs?
13:38 CGI736 BTW, only a few of the books with UPC have the additional ISBN barcode, and the numbers of the UPC don't bear any resemblance to the ISBN.
13:39 CGI736 Example (from one of my own books): ISBN = 0939763095 but UPC = 079686044332
13:42 CGI736 In case that book is too obscure, here's the info from a "Men in Black" DVD: ISBN = 0767891236 but UPC = 043396087712
13:42 kf a dvd with an isbn?
13:43 ColinC kf: No there is a method to generate a 13 digit isbn from a 10 digit one but the checkdigit is different as a result
13:43 kf ColinC: yes, I heard you can do that
13:44 ColinC Whether the UPC is derived uniformly from ISBN depends on the publisher.
13:45 CGI736 Yes, that's because the 13-digit ISBN is just the same as the 10-digit, but starting with "978" and ending with a different check digit.
13:45 CGI736 True, ColinC.
13:46 CGI736 Which brings me back to my actual question: how to look up books from scanned UPC
13:47 ColinC Also the checkdigit is a digit unlike an iSBN which allows X
13:47 owen Well, if the UPC isn't derived uniformly from the ISBN, I'm not sure you can expect to be able to CGI736
13:47 CGI736 Are there not servers, out there, that would return the right information and would allow the search key to be a UPC and not just an ISBN?
13:49 ColinC Not to my knowledge, you can try the 13 digit ISBN otherwise you have to construct a 10 digit ISBN from it
13:49 CGI736 I'm even finding that ISBN searches are not reliable: I'll do a Z39.50 search, type in an ISBN, and nothing is found, but if I search by the title, it is found (with all the right publication data) but is stated as having a different ISBN from what is printed on the book.
13:50 owen That doesn't mean the search is unreliable, it means the data is unreliable ;)
13:51 kf have you typed in the hyphens? perhaps this can make a difference too
13:51 hdl_laptop left #koha
13:51 ColinC Practices between the booktrade and bibliographic databases have not always agreed
13:51 CGI736 It means the search is unreliable BECAUSE the data are unreliable, but not that the search METHOD is unreliable.
13:51 CGI736 Have tried with and without the hyphens.
13:52 CGI736 With everything I've tried, the searches have only worked without the hyphens.
13:52 owen That's because ISBNs are stored in MARC without the hyphens
13:52 kf in marc21 without hyphens is standard
13:53 ColinC Hyhens are for display only (and are often in the wrong place) don't use them
13:54 hdl_laptop joined #koha
13:54 kf hi hdl_laptop
13:56 CGI736 Does Koha have any means (perhaps with an already-defined plugin or extension) of searching by UPC?
13:57 owen CGI736: Koha uses Z39.50 to search outside sources. If Z39.50 can't search by UPC, Koha can't.
13:58 CGI736 Or let's ask this a different way: What is the most efficient way of entering ALL of a library's books into Koha when first starting to use it?
13:59 owen CGI736: You understand the process, you just don't like the amount of work you forsee: You'll have to use Z39.50 or do original cataloging
14:03 CGI736 The difficulty is that the people who will be using this are not very computer literate and some don't read much English, but I cannot be there to input all the books for them.
14:04 owen It is certainly a difficulty.

14:06 * chris_n thinks there is no easy way to catalog a library, except possibly to pay someone else to do it
14:06 CGI736 This is a third-world country where a school had received some donated equipment and I am setting this up so that the school may have a library that can actually begin to lend books to the students.  (Mostly, for the last 50 years, the library has been used as an extra classroom or, mostly as a store room for old textbooks.)
14:07 CGI736 The fact that they now have some computers AND Internet access is going to help them tremendously.

16:23 schuster Question about RDA and Koha - have the templates been modified for 3.2 to use the new tags and subfields?  336-338, and 040$2?
16:23 schuster At a state conference listening to a presentation on RDA and the timeline - most likely mid next year full transition...
16:23 CGI536 left #koha
16:25 nengard schuster - they have been saying that for 4 years now....
16:26 nengard that doesn't answer your question - just expressing my frustration with the committee
16:26 nengard by the time it's released it will be based off of old tech already
16:26 schuster Just wanted the Koha community to be thinking about it...  It's coming...  Testing will be complete a the end of this year - and the national libraries will be putting out a timeline for conversion to RDA next year.
16:28 schuster I agree MARC is an old technology, but that is what we are living with...  Dealing with an international standard group talk about bureaucracy!
16:29 nengard no you misunderstand - they have been saying that RDA will be done for years now! we've been prepared for years
16:29 nengard it keeps getting pushed back
16:29 nengard so when they say RDA will be done next year - I'm skeptical because history says otherwise
16:30 nengard but you are right, we do need to be aware and we are and have been
16:30 wizzyrea_laptop the drumbeat has been somewhat louder this year

16:30 wizzyrea_laptop that is to say, loud enough for me to hear it
16:32 nengard us catalogers have been hearing it forever :) hehe - so that's why i'm so negative ... not the point I know - just ranting
16:32 schuster The committee has moved from should this to this will happen...  US is going to be one of the last to adopt and several other countries due to the National libraries are moving forward.
16:32 schuster So back to my original question are the Koha templates ready and able to handle the tags mentioned?
16:32 schuster And for a web developer to hear it that says something

20:52 chris oh cool
20:53 cait not a big bad bug, but something I can do
21:01 cait chris: you think its ok to remove them from all strings? I think they are confusing in the strings, but not sure, perhaps it would be better to solve this somewhere else in the translation process?
21:03 chris if you are feeling brave
21:03 chris you could look at
21:03 cait oooh
21:04 chris and make it remove them, when it creates the .po file
21:04 cait not sure im brave, im a libriarian, im more of a busy bee
21:05 chris ill have a quick look now, while its fresh in my head
21:05 francharb left #koha
21:06 cait I think the trick is not to remove them, but not to doubleescape(?) them \\
21:06 cait only one \ is needed
21:06 cait but will still be problematic with pootle, I think i tried that
21:06 chris yeah
21:07 chris we dont need the
21:07 chris m
21:07 chris ie, you dont translate them
21:07 chris so they dont need to be in the string
21:07 cait but if you remove them, how will they get back in?
21:07 chris the po file works like this
21:08 chris it takes the english line, finds that in the template
21:08 chris and switches out the english words for the translated words
21:08 cait ah, so you work around the rest of the template
21:08 chris if you dont have the \n in the english
21:08 chris then it will find the words without them and change them .. and the \n will stay just fine in the template
21:09 chris make sense?
21:09 chris its actually better that way, cos then if you have the string twice, once with \n once without
21:09 chris you now only need to translate it once
21:09 cait sounds really better
21:10 cait im done with opac ( removing..) but they are really a lot of them in inranet
21:12 * cait tries to be brave
21:13 chris problem is, they will all come back
21:13 chris when the .po file is updated (when the template changes)
21:13 chris so we have to fix it in
21:13 chris ill look into that
21:15 cait i feel a bit guilty, but I think its really a bit too much for me
