08:49 Frank_Purcell Greetings everyone. I am fairly new to KOHA, from South Africa and have many questions regarding hosting a KOHA server
09:04 magnuse welcome Frank_Purcell! you can ask your questions here, but your answers will depend on who is here and have the time, so you might get great answers or no answers. :-) the mailing lists are an alternative venue for questions
09:04 magnuse (and it's Koha, not KOHA :-)
09:12 Frank_Purcell thank you for the welcome @magnuse, I work with a company who has 60% of our countries libraries as clients. We offer library security RFID & EM, inventory solutions through RFID, self-service, automated returns & sorting etc. But we do not yet offer an LMS/ILS.

09:19 Frank_Purcell joined #koha
09:20 Frank_Purcell @magmuse I would like to offer Koha LMS to South African libraries as i know it will assist in 2 main ways. Firstly, the more $$ libraries can save on LMS, the more that can be spent on other important aspects of the library. Secondly, the LMS vendors we currently use are foreign and support locally is limited & not ideal.
09:20 huginn` Frank_Purcell: I'll give you the answer just as soon as RDA is ready
09:20 wahanui i already had it that way, huginn`.
10:05 cait hi Frank_Purcell
10:05 cait do you have any experience with Koha yet?
10:09 Frank_Purcell hi cait, sorry for slow reply. I have managed to install Koha on a virtual machine using an image. I have not gone into the command lines just yet, and I have not yet connected my virtual machine to the web.
10:09 cait ah ok, using an image for testingis ok
10:09 cait but they are often not up to date with current versions/practices
10:10 cait which version did you install?
10:11 Frank_Purcell understood, I was also worried that the image would not auto-update but i was hoping i could do that through command lines.
10:15 Frank_Purcell I am not too sure of the Koha version, as I am not near the machine at the moment, but its installed on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
10:18 Frank_Purcell i used Koha Live DVD by vimal0212, uploaded 12-2018
10:20 Frank_Purcell Ive found it, Koha 18.11.x (Stable version)
10:26 cait ok, that's a current version
10:26 cait if you check on hte about page, it shoudl tell you about the exact version
10:27 cait we have monthly bugfix releases and some stuff has been fixed
10:27 cait at the moment we are at 18.11.05
10:30 Frank_Purcell Brilliant, thank you. In terms of Koha operation I had self-trained on the bywater solutions demo, and can now operate my local machine perfectly. I have even connected RFID equipment to the local PC and everything works perfectly. What I want to do now is to make the local version web based an accessible from anywhere, and also make sure that my server can handle the additional load as i add more libraries
10:33 Frank_Purcell I am also considering getting Microsoft to host my server, as my knowledge is still extremely limited. However Im not sure what would be my responsibility and what would be theirs. I still have considerable research to do, but its been difficult finding answers. There is not much linux support in south africa
10:33 wahanui okay, Frank_Purcell.

10:42 cait wahanui:  is a bot, don't get irritated by him
10:42 cait i think if you get a hosted solution they don't take much care of what you install on it
10:42 cait backup maybe
10:46 Frank_Purcell I am worried that they do not understand the demand the Koha will have on a server as it grows (because I am not too sure myself). In other words, I am worried they will offer me a motorbike frame but I'm trying to install a car engine. =D
10:47 cait i am no ta system administrator myself and no experience there, so not sure

11:17 paxed it's silly the bot triggers with such a common phrase without explicitly mentioning the bot's nick

11:46 oleonard_ Network upgrades here... Will probably get bounced again...
11:46 Frank_Purcell hi oleonard =)
11:49 cait oleonard: I was just looking t bug 22215 - do you have a preference for naming?
11:49 huginn` Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]_bug.cgi?id=22215 normal, P5 - low, ---, nick, NEW , table_borrowers name is inconsistent with other tables
11:53 cait oleonard: did you see my question before falling off?
11:53 oleonard Yes. Looking now.
11:55 cait oki :)

12:10 magnuse Frank_Purcell: hosting on Microsoft's cloud, or Linode (my choice) or Digital ocean or something similar will probably be ok. Just choose Debian as OS for the best experience. You will have to do most things yourself. You can probably choose the OS to be installed, but after that you are on your own and the cloud provider does care much what yo uput on your vps
12:10 magnuse so you will have to do upgrades (including) the os, firewall, scaling etc
12:39 Frank_Purcell @magnuse thats fine. If i use an image of Koha installed on the same OS, with security, firewall, plugins etc. and then further configure and update manually, would this be fine? if i cant use an image, I will need to do the install manually and the learning curve is extremely steep as I had no knowledge of linux and command lines prior to Koha research
12:39 huginn` Frank_Purcell: I suck
12:50 oleonard joined #koha
12:51 magnuse Frank_Purcell: well, as long as you install on Debian it's mostly "sudo apt-get install koha-common". I'm not sure i would trust whoever put together the image with "the rest". and i think DVDs might not be set up with a lot of security anyway?
12:51 magnuse and how would you transfer the DVD image to "the cloud", anyway?
12:54 cait i strongly suggest learning how to instal Koha
13:00 Frank_Purcell @magnuse - i am struggling to link the dvd image to the cloud as we speak, so perhaps the DVD only provides a "local version". I also wouldnt know how to check on the security from where I am now. Perhaps I will simply install the software myself. Quick question then: I already have my own private domain for a personal website. Could i install KOHA on this domain? I have a standard web address but nothing important on it yet
13:00 huginn` Frank_Purcell: I'll give you the answer as soon as RDA is ready
13:00 wahanui i already had it that way, huginn`.
13:01 dersmon i am trying to add a field to my zebra authority index (Identifier-standard), inspired by: https://wiki.koha-community.or[…]d_new_zebra_index
13:02 dersmon i changed bib1.att and authority-koha-indexdefs.xml, then ran the xslt processor
13:02 dersmon and then a rebuild
13:02 magnuse Frank_Purcell: yes, you can use whatever domain-name you want, but you will need somewhere with full root access to install Koha, so a "regular/simple" webhotel will not be enough
13:03 dersmon but it is not working, what exactly is ccl.properties for?
13:04 cait bye :)
13:08 Frank_Purcell thanks @magnuse, highly appreciate your help. I will investigate with hosts and see what they can offer.
13:12 dersmon ah, I am probably missing "zebradb/marc_defs/marc21/authority/record.abs"
13:19 AndrewIsh Anyone got any ideas why I might suddenly be seeing this error on a branch that's in sync with 18.11.05? "Unknown column 'me.marcflavour' in 'where clause' at /home/koha-koha/kohaclone/Koha/Objects.pm line 92" It seems to occur when creating a bib record.
13:21 * ashimema hopes he's not got a db update wrong
13:21 ashimema I 'think' marcflavour became schema at some point.. rings a bell
13:23 Joubu AndrewIsh: do you have the whole SQL query?
13:25 AndrewIsh I've figured it out Joubu, in master biblio_metadata.marcflavour is renamed to biblio_metadata.schema, but now I'm back working on 18.11 I need to rename it back!
13:26 AndrewIsh So, yes, ashimema was right. Pesky column renaming...
13:26 magnuse ashimema: that point was 18.12.00.011 :-)
13:26 magnuse Bug 22155
13:26 huginn` Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]_bug.cgi?id=22155 enhancement, P5 - low, ---, tomascohen, RESOLVED FIXED, biblio_metadata.marcflavour should be renamed 'schema'
13:26 laurence joined #koha
13:29 AndrewIsh Thanks magnuse It's a super odd choice of name for a column as "schema" feels like the sort of thing that's likely to be a reserved word all over the place!
13:29 ashimema that is indeed the fun of using one DB but switching branches often

17:52 cait oleonard: i just remembered something... there is a quite undocumented feature on how to make borrower attributes mandatory... is that taken into account with your patches?
17:53 oleonard I'm very confused cait
17:53 cait bug 22844, pulling up the information right now sec
17:53 huginn` Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]_bug.cgi?id=22844 enhancement, P5 - low, ---, oleonard, Passed QA , Simplify the process of selecting database columns for system preferences
17:54 oleonard You can add patron attributes to that pref?

17:55 huginn` Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]_bug.cgi?id=22728 enhancement, P5 - low, ---, koha-bugs, NEW , Manual for BorrowerMandatoryField should include note on extended attributes
17:55 cait yes, sorry, I just remembered seeing this bug recently and I've actually also used it before
17:55 cait it's a bit clumsy,... but it works
17:56 oleonard 'made mandatory by entering "patron_attr_1"'... Where does the number come from?
17:56 cait i looked it up int he source code
17:57 cait i think they are just numbered from the beginning somehow
17:57 cait certainly could be improved
17:57 wizzyrea oh that's so gross :(
17:57 cait source code = html source of the page
17:59 oleonard How can that work correctly when patron attributes can have both library and category limitations?
18:02 wizzyrea if we're being honest
18:02 wizzyrea probably the fields to display should be part of the library definition
18:03 wizzyrea instead of across the whole system
18:03 wizzyrea but what a pita that would be
18:05 oleonard We'll get on that just as soon as we refactor smart-rules.pl :P
18:06 cait oleonard: maybe they just number them using the id?
18:06 cait i haven't checked really
18:06 cait but that could work in theory, using the table id
18:15 * cait sends cookies to ashimema
18:15 cait have to unpack... bbl
18:22 oleonard The borrower_attribute_types table should probably have a "mandatory" column instead
