Greetings everyone. I am fairly new to KOHA, from South Africa and have many questions regarding hosting a KOHA server |
09:04 |
|
magnuse |
welcome Frank_Purcell! you can ask your questions here, but your answers will depend on who is here and have the time, so you might get great answers or no answers. :-) the mailing lists are an alternative venue for questions |

(and it's Koha, not KOHA :-) |

Frank_Purcell |
thank you for the welcome @magnuse, I work with a company who has 60% of our countries libraries as clients. We offer library security RFID & EM, inventory solutions through RFID, self-service, automated returns & sorting etc. But we do not yet offer an LMS/ILS. |

@magmuse I would like to offer Koha LMS to South African libraries as i know it will assist in 2 main ways. Firstly, the more $$ libraries can save on LMS, the more that can be spent on other important aspects of the library. Secondly, the LMS vendors we currently use are foreign and support locally is limited & not ideal. |

hi cait, sorry for slow reply. I have managed to install Koha on a virtual machine using an image. I have not gone into the command lines just yet, and I have not yet connected my virtual machine to the web. |
10:09 |
|
cait |
ah ok, using an image for testingis ok |

but they are often not up to date with current versions/practices |
10:10 |
|
cait |
which version did you install? |
10:11 |
|
Frank_Purcell |
understood, I was also worried that the image would not auto-update but i was hoping i could do that through command lines. |
10:15 |
|
Frank_Purcell |
I am not too sure of the Koha version, as I am not near the machine at the moment, but its installed on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS |
10:18 |

i used Koha Live DVD by vimal0212, uploaded 12-2018 |
10:20 |

Ive found it, Koha 18.11.x (Stable version) |
10:26 |
|
cait |
ok, that's a current version |
10:26 |
|
cait |
if you check on hte about page, it shoudl tell you about the exact version |
10:27 |
|

we have monthly bugfix releases and some stuff has been fixed |
10:27 |
|
cait |
at the moment we are at 18.11.05 |
10:30 |
|
Frank_Purcell |
Brilliant, thank you. In terms of Koha operation I had self-trained on the bywater solutions demo, and can now operate my local machine perfectly. I have even connected RFID equipment to the local PC and everything works perfectly. What I want to do now is to make the local version web based an accessible from anywhere, and also make sure that my server can handle the additional load as i add more libraries |
10:33 |
|
Frank_Purcell |
I am also considering getting Microsoft to host my server, as my knowledge is still extremely limited. However Im not sure what would be my responsibility and what would be theirs. I still have considerable research to do, but its been difficult finding answers. There is not much linux support in south africa |

Frank_Purcell: hosting on Microsoft's cloud, or Linode (my choice) or Digital ocean or something similar will probably be ok. Just choose Debian as OS for the best experience. You will have to do most things yourself. You can probably choose the OS to be installed, but after that you are on your own and the cloud provider does care much what yo uput on your vps |
12:10 |
|
magnuse |
so you will have to do upgrades (including) the os, firewall, scaling etc |
12:39 |
|
Frank_Purcell |
@magnuse thats fine. If i use an image of Koha installed on the same OS, with security, firewall, plugins etc. and then further configure and update manually, would this be fine? if i cant use an image, I will need to do the install manually and the learning curve is extremely steep as I had no knowledge of linux and command lines prior to Koha research |

Frank_Purcell: well, as long as you install on Debian it's mostly "sudo apt-get install koha-common". I'm not sure i would trust whoever put together the image with "the rest". and i think DVDs might not be set up with a lot of security anyway? |
12:51 |
|
magnuse |
and how would you transfer the DVD image to "the cloud", anyway? |
12:54 |

cait |
i strongly suggest learning how to instal Koha |
13:00 |
|
Frank_Purcell |
@magnuse - i am struggling to link the dvd image to the cloud as we speak, so perhaps the DVD only provides a "local version". I also wouldnt know how to check on the security from where I am now. Perhaps I will simply install the software myself. Quick question then: I already have my own private domain for a personal website. Could i install KOHA on this domain? I have a standard web address but nothing important on it yet |

Frank_Purcell: yes, you can use whatever domain-name you want, but you will need somewhere with full root access to install Koha, so a "regular/simple" webhotel will not be enough |
