Can't say that I'm a Sony fan either. |

I want to say that I'm a fan of having gear that doesn't need regular servicing. But...if I say that...then my laptop is going to explode. |
00:01 |

Isn't that the company that is supposed to make the most reiable PCs? |

Isn't Lenovo with IBM? |

Yeah, I think that's my best bet |
00:03 |

There we go |
00:04 |
|
dcook |
I'm not sure what I think of the Lenovo laptops either...lol |

I have a friend who runs...I think Linux Mint on his Lenovo and he seems to like it |

I was thinking of dual booting my ASUS netbook with Ubuntu but haven't gotten around to it yet |
00:05 |

is thinking of taking July off of personal study/computer projects |
00:05 |
|
dcook |
Other than actual work stuff, of course |
00:06 |
|
* jcamins |
figured out that "personal" meant "not work." :P |
00:06 |
|
dcook |
I take my work pretty personally sometimes ;) |
00:09 |

jcamins |
Heh. True. |
00:09 |
|
dcook |
Not entirely sure where I want to go with things anyway... |
00:10 |

When I have some time, I think I'm going to use my new VM here at work to develop using Gitify |
00:10 |

Doo eet! |
00:10 |
|
dcook |
:D |
00:11 |

I suppose I want to know more about networking and sysadmin, but...it can be tough to learn things without projects and I'm not sure what "projects" would revolve around those two elements of computing |
00:12 |

dcook |
I was thinking of looking at Evergreen at some point |
00:13 |

I found EG rather daunting. |
00:13 |

Coming from you, that sounds terrifying. |
00:26 |

Hmm, why are you not cooperating, template? |
00:27 |

Yeah, I'm with wizzyrea: file a bug, make a patch, or pay someone to do it |
01:01 |

From personal experience, a lot of libraries never do inventories |
01:01 |
|
dcook |
They probably should, but they don't |
01:02 |
|
mtompset |
The only reason the libraries I'm working with are doing an inventory is because they are just entering data into the Koha system for the first time. :) |
01:02 |
|
rangi |
emails like that are why im giving my talk at kohacon |
01:02 |
|
dcook |
That said, I have done a few, and the points they mention are certainly valid... |
01:02 |
|
dcook |
Well, not valid... |
01:02 |
|
dcook |
But those are desirable features for an inventory module |
01:02 |
|
rangi |
but obviously not compelling enough for someone to write them :) |
01:02 |
|
dcook |
mtompset: That's great that they're doing it :) |
01:03 |
|
dcook |
rangi: True true |
01:03 |
|
dcook |
I think that's just a fact of life though |
01:03 |
|
dcook |
If you want something done, do it yourself or pay someone else to do it |
01:04 |
|
rangi |
even more |
01:04 |
|
dcook |
Or make a polite request and hope that someone else has similar goals |
01:04 |
|
rangi |
you just received, the culmulative effort of 217 people, over 13 years |
01:04 |
|
rangi |

01:04 |
|
rangi |
how about giving something back |
01:04 |
|
dcook |
I think that's the most important thing |
01:05 |
|
dcook |
I can understand complaining about software that one has spent thousands or millions on |
01:05 |
|
rangi |
complaining is fine |
01:05 |
|
dcook |
In itself |
01:05 |
|
rangi |
tone is the issue |
01:05 |
|
dcook |
But complaining with the expectation that you're owed something |
01:05 |

I suppose this is also the point of that proposal I sent in for VALA |
01:08 |
|
wahanui |
okay, dcook. |
01:08 |
|
dcook |
Ack |
01:08 |
|
dcook |

01:08 |
|
wahanui |
dcook: I forgot i suppose this |
01:08 |
|
rangi |
still havent heard anything back from vala |
01:08 |
|
dcook |
Same |
01:09 |
|
dcook |
But yeah, my point is that librarians and libraries need to stop thinking about things simply from the role of consumer |
01:09 |
|
dcook |
And realize that they can actually contribute and shape their own future |
01:10 |
|
jcamins |
No! Surely not! |
01:10 |
|
rangi |
heh |
01:11 |
|

I suppose that not all librarians are technical nor want to be technical, but...there are lots of ways to contribute - as wizzyrea pointed out before |

dcook, the other gotcha with stocktake is, the module works well enuff to do (imho) everything needed |
01:59 |

"Need" is a pretty subjective term though |
01:59 |
|
dcook |
But...I think I see what you're saying |
01:59 |
|
dcook |
Up until now, perhaps it has done what people needed |
01:59 |
|
mtj |
…when combined with an SQL report, to fetch various barcodes |
01:59 |
|
dcook |
Although I think there might be a bug where it can only handle so many barcodes... |
02:00 |
|
dcook |
That might've been fixed by now though |
02:00 |
|
mtj |
yeah, there is a hardcoded limit for that, afaik :/ |
02:02 |
|
dcook |
Hmm |
02:02 |
|
dcook |
But yeah, as for the itemized points, those are features that I've had with other systems I've used when doing inventories |
02:02 |
|
dcook |
They were handy |
02:03 |
|
dcook |
They're certainly doable as well |

Of course, the bad thing about automatic updates when doing inventories... |
02:11 |
|
dcook |
If you accidentally missed a section or your scanner stopped working or... or... |

Then you've updated a lot of statuses incorrectly and you need to do the batch item mod anyway :/ |

kf |

10:21 |
|
jcamins |
kf: true! |
10:21 |
|
gaetan_B |
hmm, i thought it was totally feasible to relocate authority controlled fields in other tabs than the one they usually belong to, but it seems the small plugin that handles filling the correct subfields is getting confused in that case. Anyone had this before ? |
10:21 |
|
gaetan_B |
maybe i didn't setup my framework correctly |
10:22 |
|
gaetan_B |
but all the subfields seem to be in the right tab, some of them are hidden though |
10:22 |
|
jcamins |
gaetan_B: I've done that and it's worked, when I've made sure that *every* subfield was moved. |
10:23 |
|
gaetan_B |
drojf: this actually sounds like a great idea :) |
10:23 |
|
gaetan_B |
besides, i think quite a few libraries would be interested in cheap self check out machines |
10:23 |
|
drojf |
kf: if you had two mobile self check things you could use one to checkout the other |
10:23 |

10:26 |
|
drojf |
gaetan_B: i think a fancy version (with big touch display) would be doable for 250€+ |
10:26 |
|
gaetan_B |
drojf++ |
10:27 |
|
gaetan_B |
that would be *very* neat |
10:27 |
|
gaetan_B |
obviously you would need to sort of industrialize the production if you intend to sell them |
10:27 |
|
gaetan_B |
but then |
10:27 |
|
gaetan_B |
this is cool :) |
10:28 |
|
kf |
gaetan_B: i think people could install themselves on a tablet or something that can run firefox os |
10:28 |
|
kf |
or they can hire drojf to do so :) |
10:29 |
|
drojf |
maybe i miss the crazy magic part that makes those machines ridiculously expensive. not sure what that is supposed to be though |
10:30 |
|
gaetan_B |
oh, but you're talking self checkout with barcodes ? i was thinking rfid |
10:30 |
|
drojf |
i was thinking rfid too |
10:30 |
|
drojf |
an NFC/RFID module is actually cheaper than a barcode scanner |
10:30 |
|
gaetan_B |
jcamins: could my problem stem from the fact the whole "see also" section is missign from my framework for the 100$a ? I don't see where this information comes from |
10:31 |
|
jcamins |
gaetan_B: I'm not sure what you mean. |
10:32 |
|
jcamins |
Boy am I not happy with this year's KohaCon. |
10:32 |
|
gaetan_B |
jcamins: when i look at the subfields for the 100 fiel in the marc structure of the default framework (which works) i see this in front of the $a : Tab:1, | Koha field: biblio.author, Not repeatable, Not mandatory, | See Also: '100b','100c','100q','100d','100e','110a','110b','110c','110d','110e','111a','111e','111c','111d','130a','700a','700b','700c','700q','700d','700e','710a','710b','710c','710d','7 |
10:32 |
|
gaetan_B |
hmm, that was probably too long for IRC |
10:32 |
|
drojf |
jcamins: why? |
10:33 |
|
gaetan_B |
anyway, there's a whole section with fields and subfields, but i don't see where this is configured |
10:33 |
|
jcamins |
drojf: because despite the fact that my reservation was for October, the *casino* that the conference is being held at billed me in June... for not showing up. |
10:33 |
|
jcamins |
gaetan_B: weird. I have no idea what that is. |
10:33 |

my monday can hardly get any better |
10:54 |
|
gaetan_B |
when filling the authority controlled fields in cataloging, could it be that the part that identifies where the information should be added bases itself on the default framework and not the framework currently used ? |
10:59 |
|
kf |
gaetan_B: nothing is impossible. |
10:59 |
|
kf |
not helpful i know :) |
11:00 |
|
kf |
maybe get someone to take a look at the code? |
11:00 |
|
gaetan_B |
i'll try this when they are done training themselves |
11:00 |
|
gaetan_B |
i have had a look at the code, there is no reference to frameworks in that part, so it *could* be the reason |
11:01 |
|
gaetan_B |
because when i do this, i usually set up my simplified framework as the default one, which i haven't yet |
11:01 |
|
gaetan_B |
and this is the first time i am having this problem |
11:30 |

Anyway, hi all. Why I'm really here: is there a standard for whether or not a range "from 2013-06-01 to 2013-06-02" actually includes the whole of 2013-06-02 or not? As in, does the range finish at 2013-06-02 00:00:00 or 2013-06-02 23:59:59? |
13:21 |
|
drojf |
"Ixquick is a metasearch engine based in New York and the Netherlands." |
13:21 |
|
drojf |
i guess that would not make a difference ;) |

13:25 |
|
eythian |
slef: I think I presume them to be inclusive, unless stated otherwise |
13:25 |
|
drojf |
slef: a range is defined from its beginning to its end, in my understanding it should include the whole 2013-06-02 |
13:26 |
|
slef |
eythian, drojf: I think I do too, but both a colleague and MySQL just did the opposite and I've found nothing to contradict them besides anecdotes :-/ |
13:27 |
|
eythian |
which is the opposite? I can imagine four different ways of doing it. |
13:27 |
|
slef |
interpreting YYYY-MM-DD as "YYYY-MM-DD 00:00:00" always |
13:27 |
|
eythian |
I think if I were to say "the show was running from the 1st to the 3rd", it'd be clear that it was inclusive. |

jcamins: So I've heard. mtompset: perhaps. Less stigmatizing, and that's a good thing, but it makes it *harder* to get insurance coverage. (As if it wasn't hard enough.) |
19:34 |

mtompset |
Ah, nasty double-edged sword that is. |

@later tell slef re: duckduckgo vs. ixquick, i remembered why i had the vague distaste for ixquick. https://trac.torproject.org/pr[…]et/4902#comment:6 also further down it says they did not want to work with tor. there is even a new bug on that tracker asking to be removed as standard search engine from the tor browser bundle. duckduckgo on the other hand has a hidden tor service and runs a tor exit enclave |
