02:37 bencahill hey guys...currently my server is a p4 2.5 with 1GB ram and a 40GB ide drive, running koha with ~2k biblios/items. What should I be looking for upgrading..mainly a fast cpu, or fast hdd (or ssd) raid..etc?
02:37 trea2 is now known as trea
02:37 jcamins_away bencahill: CPU and RAM.
02:38 jcamins_away bencahill: faster HDD + RAID would be a good idea, but chances are your bottleneck is CPU and RAM.
02:38 bencahill jcamins_away: my thoughts as well...
02:38 bencahill jcamins_away: so I could probably just get a pair of 250GB 7200RPM drives and put them in a raid1, and that would be plenty for my disk needs?
02:38 jcamins_away Usually it's RAM, but P4 2.5 is kinda old.
02:39 jcamins_away bencahill: I would think so.
02:39 bencahill jcamins_away: yeah, right now pageloads are on the order of 4-8 seconds, mostly 100% cpu
02:39 trea1 left #koha
02:39 jcamins_away is now known as jcamins
02:39 jcamins A modern CPU should fix that.
02:39 jcamins What sort of load do you have?
02:40 bencahill jcamins: would 4GB of RAM be plenty, or might I want more?
02:40 jcamins And anticipate.
02:40 jcamins Depends on the size of your library.
02:40 bencahill jcamins: only one person at a time in the library, checking in and out books
02:40 jcamins How many records?
02:40 bencahill jcamins: as time goes on, more people may use the OPAC, but I doubt it would be any more than 2 or 3 at a time
02:40 bencahill ~2k biblios and items
02:41 jcamins Oh, 1GB would actually be enough for that.
02:41 jcamins Mind you, 4GB would be a heck of a lot better.
02:41 bencahill jcamins: yeah, that's kinda what I thought :P
02:41 bencahill jcamins: considering ram is pretty cheap though...
02:42 jcamins Yeah, that's what I was going to say. You can get 4GB for $50 or something like that. It's a small investment for a great deal of room for expansion.
02:42 bencahill right now backup sql.gz's are 6.2M
02:42 bencahill jcamins: right, so a small raid1, and 4GB of ram, and then spend the rest on a fast cpu?
02:43 bencahill I'm assuming koha can utilize multi-core processors well?
02:44 trea left #koha
02:44 jcamins Heh.
02:44 jcamins I don't think it even needs to be a *fast* CPU.
02:44 jcamins Just a modern one.
02:45 jcamins I easily run much heavier systems on a VM on my Intel Core 2 Duo laptop.
02:45 jcamins Well, kind of.
02:45 jcamins Since it's CGI, if you have multiple requests at once, they'll run on different cores.
02:45 jcamins If you only have one request, there's nothing particularly multithreaded.
02:45 jcamins (though I suppose MySQL could use one core and Apache the other)
02:45 bencahill jcamins: how much faster do you think an athlon64 x2 5000+ (dual-core 2.8) would be than a p4 2.5?
02:46 bencahill jcamins: oh, so if I was going for more speed on single-user loads, I'd want to get higher clock/bus/cache than cores?
02:47 jcamins Well, according to cpubenchmark.net, the P4 has a score of 304, and the Athlon a score of 1344.
02:48 bencahill jcamins: do you trust those generally? I like that as well for having a nice spreadsheet :P
02:48 jcamins I don't think clock/bus/cache makes that much of a difference, really.
02:48 jcamins I mean, it does, but I think you need really big changes for it to make a difference.
02:48 jcamins I think as ballpark estimates, cpubenchmark.net probably offers value.
02:49 bencahill jcamins: right, but neither would cores if your application is not multithreaded :-/
02:49 jcamins bencahill: right, I'd probably just save the money.
02:50 bencahill jcamins: okay...(this is for our church, so right now I need to get a ballpark figure for upgrading...I'm thinking 300-400 USD)
02:50 jcamins Go with a dual-core system, so that MySQL and Apache each have their own core.
02:50 bencahill jcamins: yeah, so like a modern athlon or i3 dual-core...
02:52 jcamins Right.
02:52 jcamins That's what I'd do.
02:52 jcamins $300-400 seems perfectly reasonable.
02:52 jcamins Heck, you could probably get a prebuilt system in that range that would do what you need.
02:53 bencahill jcamins: good point, I hadn't thought of that...would save time :-P
02:53 jcamins Right.
02:53 bencahill jcamins: what companies do stuff like that (without junk like monitor, video card, etc.)?
02:54 jcamins Hm.
02:54 * jcamins doesn't even know anymore.
02:54 bencahill hehe
02:55 bencahill ...not that building is a problem, I quite enjoy it...but yeah, if I could get one prebuilt, that would be faster
02:55 bencahill I'll look around and see if I see anything I like
02:57 jcamins newegg?
02:58 * bencahill has 6 newegg tabs open currently :P
02:58 bencahill although just looking at parts right now...
02:58 bencahill and yeah, stuff is cheap :P
02:59 jcamins Amazing, isn't it?
03:00 bencahill it seems like the amd cpu's are still cheaper for the same performance...
03:00 bencahill jcamins: and nice :)
03:00 * bencahill sits on his old athlon64 single-core 1.8, purring along happily :)
03:01 bencahill newegg doesn't really have anything in the way of amd dual-core :-/
03:05 bencahill actually looking at more like $25 for 4GB ram...and not looking at off-brands, more like crucial, kingston
03:07 bencahill whoa, hdd prices really have skyrocketed, though...got a couple of tb drives last year for $50-60 each, now cheapest 250GB on newegg is $80 o.0 ...may skip the raid :P
03:07 jcamins Yikes.
03:07 jcamins Might be a good idea.
03:08 bencahill yeah, I think due to flooding in japan this past summer/fall
03:08 bencahill my brother in server/db administration mentioned it last year, said they had tripled in price
03:12 bencahill jcamins: I suppuse for something like this, a 400W psu would be plenty, right?
03:13 jcamins I would think.
03:15 bencahill I think the computer we built here is something like that...and it has three hdd's and a graphics card :P
03:17 jcamins That should be plenty.
03:26 * jcamins calls it a night.

10:14 Pratyush The library system given below seem to be meant for commercial library purpose –  while Our other client  is intending to cater to departmental needs of technical reference from any where any time.  This would mean books will be converted to PDF – non saving, non printing at client side.  Pl check whether this is similar requirement at MPID as well.

14:52 libsysguy well if you were also thinking about your patch I didn't get a chance to finish
14:52 * jcamins is now thinking about you for two reasons.
14:52 jcamins You shouldn't have reminded me. :P
14:52 libsysguy what CSS and jQuery
14:52 jcamins On catalog.uttyler.edu.
14:53 libsysguy did I hide it?
14:53 jcamins No, I thought I recalled you posting it on a wiki somewhere.
14:53 libsysguy ohhh no I didn't
14:53 jcamins Ah.
14:53 libsysguy would you like me to?
14:53 jcamins Please!
14:53 libsysguy will do
14:54 libsysguy sorry jcamins
14:54 jcamins Thanks. :)
14:54 libsysguy is there a theme secion in the wiki
14:54 jcamins Not yet.
14:54 jcamins There should be, though.
14:55 libsysguy maybe I should create it and put it there
14:55 jcamins Sounds like a good idea. :)
14:55 jcamins Thanks!

15:27 jcamins chris_n: are you rounding all the corners now, too?
15:28 chris_n yup, I like the "sculpted" look
15:29 * jcamins has decided to not care about IE for right now.
15:30 chris_n that's generally a good attitude to take toward IE
15:32 * jcamins considers colors.
15:37 cait :)
15:37 cait I didn't sneak away!
15:41 libsysguy noooo don't round the corners with CSS
15:41 libsysguy unless you don't care about IE users
15:41 libsysguy then by all means…ROUND ALL THE CORNERS
15:42 * libsysguy comes back from his…*ehem* morning activities
15:42 * jcamins probably should care about IE users.
15:42 * jcamins doesn't, really.
15:42 * libsysguy wishes I didn't have to
15:42 * jcamins decides to see what it looks like in IE.
15:42 libsysguy it just doesn't do them
15:42 libsysguy in 7 or 8
15:42 libsysguy not sure about 9
15:43 libsysguy but I don't think it does them there either
15:44 jcamins Hm.
15:44 jcamins It doesn't even do the background properly.
15:44 jcamins This shouldn't be that hard.
15:44 libsysguy well IE rarely does anything correctly
15:44 jcamins The background is *black*.
15:44 libsysguy what does your CSS look like to set it?
15:45 jcamins background: black;
15:45 * libsysguy has battled with IE before
15:45 jcamins Here's the problem.
15:45 jcamins There's an ms-linear-gradient in the stylesheet.
15:45 libsysguy ahh
15:45 jcamins And apparently order of loading has no relevance to IE.
15:46 libsysguy what version?
15:46 jcamins Maybe I should do a gradient.
15:46 jcamins 8.
15:46 libsysguy hmm…it was 7 that generally had the gradient issues
15:46 libsysguy at least we don't have to support 6 anymore
15:46 jcamins Well, I don't want any gradient at all.
15:47 libsysguy oh…I thought thats what you were doing
15:47 libsysguy oops
15:47 jcamins No, I'm thinking of adding a gradient because apparently gradients take precedence over non-gradient backgrounds.
15:47 libsysguy so the background:black comes after the gradient and its still applying
15:47 jcamins Right.
15:47 libsysguy 0_0
15:48 libsysguy can you do a background:none; then background:black;?
15:48 libsysguy like a reset...
15:48 jcamins Hm.
15:49 jcamins No luck.
15:49 libsysguy c.r.a.p.
15:49 jcamins Well, I'll fiddle with IE more after I've gotten it looking nice in every other intelligent browser.
15:49 libsysguy haha
15:50 jcamins Well, every intelligent browser.
15:50 jcamins No "other" about it.
15:50 libsysguy thats probably the most frustrating part…you get it working in all the "other" browsers then try and fix it in IE, and break all the other browsers
15:50 libsysguy scumbag IE
15:52 cait what libsysguy said...
15:52 cait been there, done that, want to stay away
