11:29 oleonard Hi all
11:30 AndrewIsh Hi oleonard
11:30 wahanui hi oleopard
11:31 AndrewIsh oleonard: Just an FYI, that question I was asking yesterday about the strange use of api() in KohaTable. As I mentioned, I rebased Bug 20600, that I needed to use it with, but seems that the rebase was bad, despite it appearing to work. Anyway, I've rebased it properly this time! What's on BZ should now work :)

19:33 andreashm hi #koha
19:47 caroline_ Anybody know anything about LSPs? (Library Services Platform)
19:47 caroline_ Library tech. students asked me about it this morning. It is apparently the future of ILSs (?)
19:47 rangi caroline_: its a marketing term
19:47 rangi like cloud = someone elses computers
19:48 rangi LSP = whatever whoever is selling it at the time decides it is
19:48 caroline_ hehehe!
19:48 rangi you'll hear EBSCO for example talk about FOLIO as an LSP in one breath, and as an ILS in another
19:49 rangi bascially it kinda boils down to a hosted multitenant system that provides library services
19:49 caroline_ Does it have to do with discovery platforms?
19:49 rangi it could
19:49 caroline_ hosted multitenant system? In english?
19:50 rangi think of a hosted koha, on a cluster of servers
19:50 rangi that serves 5 different libraries, each separate
19:51 rangi they dont even need to know the others are there
19:51 caroline_ but just one koha?
19:51 rangi one code base
19:51 rangi multiple databases in the back (or siloed data in another way in the case of FOLIO)
19:52 caroline_ Because that's pretty much what we have here. We have maybe 4-5 servers each with 6-9 kohas running on them
19:52 rangi exactly
19:52 rangi now say you offered vufind, or eds with that
19:52 rangi you could say, its a platform
19:52 rangi but like I say, its not a real term, its a marketing one
19:53 caroline_ ok so like a solution incorporating more than one software working in concert
19:53 rangi thats one definition yep
19:53 rangi but really you can say it is whatever you feel like :)
19:54 rangi cos you know the proprietary vendors will, an LSP will be whatever they have :)
19:54 caroline_ I think this is one of the things they were referring to this morning : https://www.mcgill.ca/library/about/planning/new-library-services-platform
19:55 rangi yeah
19:55 rangi you could subsitute library system
19:55 rangi for library services platform
19:55 caroline_ ILS is too old school ;)
19:55 rangi and it would be equally valid
19:55 rangi yep
19:56 rangi often we say Library Management System
19:56 rangi not ILS
19:56 rangi its just whoever your audience is, and what they want to hear :)
19:56 caroline_ hehe!
19:57 caroline_ But if it's the new buzzword, it's good to know it
19:57 rangi yup
20:00 andreashm I would say that LSP is a broader definition than ILS
20:00 rangi andreashm: i'd say that nothing in that broader definition actually exists yet ;)
20:01 rangi but yeah it can be whatever you want it to be, in maybe 3 more years there will be an accepted definition
20:01 andreashm pff. semantics. =)
20:01 rangi but now ive heard people say LSP when they are talking about ALMA
20:01 rangi which is fully an ILS
20:01 rangi but also LSP talking about FOLIO, which potentially could be more than an ILS
20:02 andreashm LMS I've hards used for Alma
20:02 andreashm heard
20:02 rangi once EBSCO started using LSP, Proquest started too
20:02 rangi thats how those 2 roll :)
20:02 andreashm yup
20:02 rangi but it is a good one to be aware of
20:03 caroline_ From what I'm reading here http://www.sirsidynix.com/products/library-services-platform it seems to refer to web-based ILS
20:03 rangi yeah which koha has been since 1999
20:03 caroline_ "The BLUEcloud LSP is the future of library software. It brings the power of contemporary cloud computing to Horizon and Symphony and avoids the costs of a system migration"
20:03 caroline_ I know! We should totally market it as an LSP
20:03 rangi but thats cos thats what sirsidynix have to offer, so thats an LSP
20:03 rangi EBSCO have FOLIO, so now thats an LSP
20:04 rangi :)
20:04 rangi marketing is fun
20:04 caroline_ Sirsi are not marketing Symphony as an LSP though
20:05 rangi afaict its symphony hosted with some other stuff
20:05 andreashm I would think you need to offer something like SaaS to make claims of a LSP. Something "in the cloud" as rangi says
20:05 rangi sirsi also say this too
20:05 rangi The BLUEcloud LSP is a truly open system, powered by Web Services that can extend almost anywhere. With this flexible architecture, vendors and customers alike can develop integrations and solutions quickly, giving you the most options for your library system.
20:06 rangi so yeah they will even co opt open to refer to proprietary software
20:06 andreashm with some other systems/modules added probably. Sirsi has Coral as the ERM for Blue cloud I think?
20:06 rangi words actually have no meaning in marketing hehehe
20:06 rangi andreashm: thats right
20:07 rangi to their credit they even funded some dev on Coral
20:07 * andreashm should put some marketing buzz-words into my presentation. claim we have an LSP perhaps?
20:07 rangi which we should hear about next week in one of the talks I think
20:07 rangi andreashm: if you have koha + something else hosted then yeah you could totally call it an LSP i reckon
20:07 andreashm rangi: yeah, Sirsi does some good stuff here and there. after all. =)
20:08 rangi now that stephen abrams is gone
20:08 andreashm rangi: we do. and even built a service layer to handle the api calls. so def an lsp. or so I'll claim! =)
20:08 rangi yup :)
20:08 caroline_ Ah! It's all this guy Marshall Breeding's fault : "I coined the term library services platform in 2011
20:08 caroline_ to describe a new set of products that were being developed that promised to take a much different approach to library resource management than the incumbent integrated library systems."
20:09 andreashm rangi: was that the dude who dissed open source?
20:09 andreashm (stephen abrams)
20:10 rangi andreashm: thats right was the VP at SirsiDynix, wrote that big whitepaper on how it was indirectly funding terrorism and other ridiculous claims
20:10 rangi was aimed more at OLE than Koha but still
20:10 andreashm yeah, that was a crazy piece of writing
20:10 * andreashm remembers it fondly
20:10 rangi heh
20:10 rangi ok, i gotta go teach a class on SQL
20:11 rangi see you in the USA in a few days
20:11 andreashm best of luck!
20:11 andreashm yup, look forward to meeting irl
20:12 cait cya in Portland, rangi
20:14 andreashm hi cait!
20:14 andreashm sent you an e-mail earlier.
20:17 cait yep, thx!!
