06:12 bigbrovar hi
06:17 imran Hello
06:18 imran is there any support/activity for distributed databases with koha?
06:18 imran cassandra project
06:32 bigbrovar Hi guys after importing marc records to koha 3.2 and indexing I am unable to search items both on opac and staff client :(
06:36 bigbrovar at first I was getting this error http://pastebin.com/32rtBm9n so I had to manually create zebradb/biblios/norm..LCK and zebradb/biblios/shadow..LCK under /var/lock/koha which seems to stop the error showing and indexing seemed to run fine
06:40 bigbrovar This is the out put when I tried to index http://pastebin.com/hheNX2zy
06:41 bigbrovar everything seem to fine when imported marc record and added them to the catalog so it is really hard to understand why searching for items is not working
06:42 bigbrovar am using koha 3.2.0 on debian squeeze. I installed koha using the debian squeeze package for it
06:44 wasabi bigbrovar: is your zebrasrv running?
06:48 bigbrovar wasabi: http://pastebin.com/FmugBkC5
06:49 brendan ah bigbrovar that looks like your zebrasrv is not running
06:50 wasabi ah… yep ;)
06:50 brendan hey wasabi
06:52 bigbrovar thanks how do I start it?
06:52 brendan there are instructions in the INSTALL docs
06:53 brendan you probably have a permissions issue or you aren't starting it with the correct user
06:55 bigbrovar I installed using the debian package for squeeze and as far as I could tell the koha user is root using that method and I followed the install doc to the letter. I would go over it again to see if I missed anything
07:01 bigbrovar brendan: unfortunately there is no reference in the /usr/share/doc/koha/README.Debian or http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Debian (the wiki I used) on how to start zebrasrv
07:01 bigbrovar I also noticed it is not in the init.d script which means it is most likly not started with the system
07:02 brendan hmm.. going to go look at the one that installed from debian - it will be a minute
07:02 brendan usually their is an init.d script
07:03 wasabi http://git.koha-community.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=koha.git;a=blob;f=INSTALL.debian;h=e5c560d5d1b1b49e864fea66752cae93316ab556;hb=HEAD
07:03 wasabi http://git.koha-community.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=koha.git;a=blob;f=INSTALL.debian
07:04 wasabi 232 $ sudo -u <kohauser> zebrasrv -f /etc/koha/koha-conf.xml
07:04 brendan yup I've got a koha-zebra-daemon in there
07:05 bigbrovar yeah I have that too in our older instance of koha (3.0.6) which I installed from source on Ubuntu 8.04
07:06 bigbrovar but not on the debian install .. I might have to create it.
07:07 wasabi heya brendan :)
07:08 bigbrovar to think it would have been easier installing koha with a simple apt-get install I could have just gone the *hardway* and installed from source
07:08 wasabi fyi: ive yet to try out the squeeze-koha deb install, so im not much help
07:09 wasabi bigbrovar: it s only difficult the *1st* time :)
07:10 bigbrovar wasabi: Yeah I really regret not just installing from source. Ihave had to manually create many things which should have been setup doing install.
07:24 bigbrovar brendan: could u please pastebin me a copy of your zebradaemon init script so I could modify for my server. or is it safe to use ( and modify) the one I have on ubuntu 8.04 Koha 3.0.6
08:30 bigbrovar guess I would have to start everything from scratch :(
08:39 * bigbrovar gosh this is soo frustrating as I watch 2 weeks work go down the drain
08:39 bigbrovar anyone knows of a good documentation on how to install koha 3.2 from scratch?
08:40 bigbrovar on debian
08:40 bigbrovar squeeze
08:53 chris bigbrovar: the squeeze packages do install the init.d script
08:54 chris we use the debian packages
08:55 chris but if you want to learn koha, installing from source is good
09:00 bigbrovar I realy dont know what went wrong with my install then. I followed the guide to the letter but i found zebreserve wont start and some directories were not created
09:00 bigbrovar when I tried to index i gave some errors
09:02 bigbrovar chris: the painful part was all this happened after I had read the 360 package manual and setup system preferences, libraries, item tyoe etc and imported marc. and even spoend the whole of yesterday doing css and branding work on opac
09:02 bigbrovar only to find searching doesnt work and then zebraserv was not running
09:03 bigbrovar trying to fix the problem showed many things where missing from the installation and I had to create them manually and now the system is completely broken it wont even show opac
09:04 bigbrovar its just a labour of love for a local school library here its really frustrating
09:04 chris hmm not sure what you did, but we run a bunch of libraries using the packages
09:04 * chris has to go to sleep now
09:06 bigbrovar well I guess documentation could be better. I don't have a deep knowledge of linux or even LMS but we have a working koha 3.0.6 which I installed from source using docs
09:06 * bigbrovar oh well time to go get a life

10:14 cait hi #koha :)
11:10 cait hi magnus
11:10 cait spending your weekend at #koha? :)
11:10 magnus hi cait - yeah, and you too? ;-)
11:11 cait oh, I like this little place
11:11 cait but I thought you had a life :)
11:13 magnus nah, too much stuff that need to be done in too little time...
11:13 magnus hope it will get better in 2011 though
11:13 cait magnus: hm not sure about that
11:14 cait I think things will be different, but we should not dream about more time ;)
11:14 magnus nah, but i will have fewer projects on the side (of koha) at least
11:14 cait :)
11:14 cait so you will have time to teach me perl?
11:15 cait ;)
11:15 cait nah, I really want to finish learning perl this year
11:15 cait and perhaps get a course or something next year
11:17 magnus i'm afraid u'm not the one to teach enyone perl...
11:17 magnus there are some books on it, though...
11:17 magnus s/u'm/i'm/
11:18 cait yep
11:18 cait I was refering to the "learning perl" book
11:18 cait :)
11:18 magnus ah...
11:19 robin_ cait: I've heard good things about "Learning Perl"
11:19 cait hi robin
11:20 cait yeah, I like how it is written - it's a time problem
11:20 robin_ I learned from "Programming Perl", which is a bit deep-endish if you haven't done much programming before.
11:20 cait as always :)
11:20 robin_ heh yes
11:20 cait I lack practice - I learned java basics for my distance study courses - but I have already forgotten most of it :(
11:21 magnus forgetting java is a good thing...
11:21 magnus *hides*
11:21 cait not if you have more courses ahead
11:21 robin_ magnus: hey!
11:21 magnus hey robin_! ;-)
11:21 robin_ cait: then I suspect Learning is the best place to begin.
11:21 robin_ magnus: no talking smack about Java, tyvm :)
11:22 cait robin_: you like java?
11:22 robin_ I use it for a desktop app I develop.
11:22 cait tomcat doesn't like me - always get it to die on me
11:22 magnus sorry, i just couldn't let the opportunity pass me by...
11:23 robin_ ah, (in a former life) we had tomcat issues, solved them by moving to Glassfish.
11:23 robin_ magnus: :)
11:23 robin_ http://www.kallisti.net.nz/EMusicJ/HomePage/ <-- this is an app I write
11:24 magnus cool
11:24 magnus with support from naxos?
11:25 robin_ magnus: they pay me to make customisations for them
11:25 magnus cool!
11:25 robin_ https://launchpad.net/emusicj <-- all the source lives here
11:26 robin_ in the past couple of years, they've cause the biggest number of improvements.
11:26 robin_ *caused
11:26 cait magnus: do you have an up to date master and can test 4924 for me?
11:26 cait I don't see the public note
11:28 cait hm, I don't even see it on the items tab
11:28 * cait gets more and more confused
11:28 cait robin_: cool :)
11:30 magnus cait: i can test on head.bibkat.no
11:30 magnus robin_: yet another reason to like naxos, then ;-)
11:30 cait that would be nice - thank you1
11:31 robin_ magnus: indeed, even if I'm not a fan of classical. I tend to like the Norwegian metal ;)
11:31 magnus robin_: ooh, svartmetall?
11:32 cait ohoh
11:33 cait magnus: it' me - I confused public and internal notes...
11:33 * cait sighs
11:33 cait but robin's patch will fix that
11:34 cait robin++ and a cookie for fixing the internal note
11:34 cait        hm, and sekjal++
11:35 magnus robin_: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWmBRhVHOhg ;-)
11:36 robin_ magnus: emperor, mayhem, theatre of tragedy, that sort of thing
11:36 * robin_ looks
11:36 robin_ magnus: that is awesome
11:36 magnus yeah ;-)
11:37 robin_ oh yeah, dimmu borgir
11:38 robin_ ah, now I understand svartmetal :)
11:38 * robin_ is learning
11:39 magnus ;-)
11:39 cait magnus: now you have distracted him from fixing koha bugs
11:39 cait and made him learn norwegian
11:39 * cait shakes head
11:39 robin_ it's past midnight and I've had a few beers, never a good time for bug fixing.
11:40 cait wow right, it's 1 am for you
11:40 magnus cheers, mate! ;-)
11:41 robin_ ja, soon I should sleep :)
11:43 cait :)
11:44 magnus "ja" - another norwegian (and german) word!
11:45 robin_ magnus: and Dutch
11:45 magnus probably
11:45 robin_ (which is the only other language I come close to knowing anything about, aside from English and Māori)
11:48 cait :)
11:49 robin_ Welterusten, y'all :)
11:50 cait gute nacht robin :)
11:50 robin_ dankje
11:50 * cait whispers to magnus: what did he say?
11:51 robin_ (cait: het Nederlands is _right beside_ you)
11:52 magnus welterusten - i have no idea...
11:52 cait ok
11:52 cait so no change if he speaks nz english or dutch
11:53 magnus Welterusten = good night, according to teh googlez
11:53 robin_ it means "goodnight" in Nederlands. You people...
11:53 robin_ :)
11:53 magnus sorry bout that - europe is a small area with lots of languages... ;-)
11:54 cait yep, lots of languages
11:54 robin_ and it's only Reed who can't understand my English (that's what I keep saying to myself, anyway), and he's American, so he has an excuse ;)
11:54 cait to be fair, I could understand you most of the time
11:54 robin_ haha
11:55 robin_ I was slowing down for your benefit :) I can talk to locals so that it's not understood by English-as-a-second-language people quite happily :)
11:57 cait hmpf
11:57 magnus hehe english is fun
11:58 robin_ I guess you haven't met Glaswegian. I know it's the same language, but I can't understand it at all.
12:00 magnus that's the fun part
12:00 magnus lots of different "versions"
12:00 robin_ (Or, if you have, maybe it sounded like Finnish, or something equally mad)
12:04 magnus i think i would recognize finnish, though
12:04 robin_ doesn't stop it from being mad.
12:05 robin_ (I'm pretty sure it's Finnish that is quite unlike any other language nearby)
12:05 robin_ If not, assume I was talking about one that is :)
12:05 robin_ anyway, ik zal later zie je. I really should sleep now.
12:06 magnus that would be finnish, yes
12:06 magnus sleep tight, robin_
12:06 robin_ byebye!
12:07 magnus cait++ # for rebasing patches, getting them into master and closing bugs
12:07 * cait blushes
12:08 cait thx
12:09 cait you know, we librarians like it tidy and organized ;)
12:09 magnus hehe

13:43 magnus hiya druthb
13:43 nengard Howdy
13:43 druthb hi. :)
13:43 cait hi druthb
13:43 magnus wassup!
13:43 nengard Waiting fir second airplane home
13:43 magnus sounds like fun!
13:43 druthb me, but just barely. Just climbed out of bed a few minutes ago.
13:44 nengard Then home less than 24 hrs before I go out again
13:44 nengard :(
13:44 magnus wow, i could not have done what you are doing, nengard
13:45 magnus traveling once a month is enough for me
13:45 nengard I don't know if I can do what I'm doing
13:46 magnus druthb: good morning, then ;-)
13:46 druthb :)
13:46 cait nengard: hope you will have a break soon?
13:48 nengard Um.. january I think
13:53 cait uh
13:56 jcamins_a   nengard++ # for sheer awesomeness
13:57 nengard Heh
13:57 nengard Sheer tiredness right now
13:58 nengard Gotta say I like this irc app
13:58 magnus which one?
13:58 nengard Andchat
13:59 magnus for android, i guess?
13:59 nengard I was bored and I knew someone in Koha land would be awake to keep me company :)
13:59 nengard Yes
13:59 * jcamins is writing a presentation
13:59 magnus the sun never sets on #koha...
14:00 nengard On what jcamins?
14:00 * magnus is trying to upgrade some 2.2.9 data to 3.2
14:00 cait jcamins: oh, should do that too :(
14:00 jcamins magnus: ewww!
14:00 magnus yeah...
14:00 nengard Magnus that is no fun
14:00 jcamins nengard: "Collecting Books Without Losing Your Sanity." I'm writing about the practical aspects of managing a book collection.
14:01 jcamins Extra bookshelves, LT, etc.
14:01 nengard Sounds like a fun topic!
14:01 jcamins It is. And the invitations are fantastic.
14:02 nengard I have over 800 books in practically no order...
14:02 magnus extra bookshelves sounds like a good idea...
14:02 jcamins If it weren't for the fact that you'll be traveling, I'd send you an invitation.
14:02 jcamins :)
14:02 nengard Invitations?
14:02 nengard :(
14:02 nengard Always travelling
14:03 jcamins I mean, I still could, but I don't imagine you'll be in the NYC area Dec 7.
14:03 jcamins The presentation I'm planning is part of a seminar I'm co-leading with a financial planner and an estate lawyer.
14:04 nengard Oh u talked about that.
14:04 magnus ooh, sounds like serious book collecting... :-)
14:04 nengard Yeah probably not around
14:04 jcamins magnus: oh yes, people take book collecting *very* seriously.
14:05 nengard U gonna come to my nylink open source day?
14:05 jcamins In Buffalo? It's a bit far.
14:05 nengard I forget the date :)
14:05 nengard No
14:05 * druthb has a different collecting problem. Big chunks of lumber that I haven't got around to doing things with yet.
14:05 nengard Nyc
14:05 jcamins Ooh!
14:05 nengard Next year
14:05 nengard Druthb u can build me a new shed :)
14:06 jcamins March 8.
14:06 jcamins druthb: big chunks of lumber?
14:06 * druthb is a woodturner.
14:06 jcamins I'm not sure that Koha would be such a good choice for cataloging those.
14:06 nengard What is a woodturner?
14:06 magnus who knows? :-)
14:06 nengard Hehe
14:06 druthb Someone who takes bits of wood, and puts them on the lathe, and makes round things out of them.
14:07 nengard Oh! Never heard of it
14:07 jcamins Oh, I'm glad to see that Nylink got the tenses in your bio right. :)
14:07 magnus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodturning
14:07 nengard Hehe
14:07 druthb I turn wood-barrelled pens and mechanical pencils, keychains, fan pulls, small stuff, mostly.
14:08 nengard Cool. Do u have an etsy store?
14:08 magnus druthb: do you have a mini lathe for that?
14:08 druthb Not at the moment; I've got a bunch up on a page on Facebook (Trans-Formed Woodworks). I'm adding about 25 more today. :)
14:08 druthb magnus: yeah, a big one won't fit in my apartment. :)
14:08 nengard Will look when I get home
14:08 magnus cool
14:09 druthb cait's seen my work. :)

14:14 nengard Hehe
14:14 jcamins That's very nifty, but you don't have any photos of your work yet? :(
14:15 nengard K boarding soon
14:15 druthb The pen that cait has has gone almost all the way around the world...here, to LA, to NZ, then back around to Germany.
14:15 nengard Will talk to u all later
14:15 druthb be safe, nengard.
14:15 druthb jcamins: There are some there, yes, and more being added today.
14:16 * magnus just did "sudo apt-get install koha" - that is teh awesome!
14:17 jcamins Oh, I see... it's a profile so I have to friend it.
14:17 druthb Hm.. Thought I had pictures open to everyone..
14:18 jcamins Once I friended the profile, the photos showed up, even though you haven't confirmed yet.
14:18 jcamins Some sort of bug, maybe.
14:18 jcamins Ooh, those are beautiful.
14:18 druthb Facebook? Buggy? Couldn't be..
14:18 druthb Thanks! :)
14:19 jcamins It's a shame that I use very narrow pens.
14:19 druthb I have some that are very narrow; it's a little harder to carve that way, but they come out really nice.
14:20 druthb There's one carved in Bethlehem olive wood that will be in today's batch of pictures. Beautiful coffee-and-cream grain to it.
14:22 * magnus wanders off to make dinner
14:27 jcamins My pen is 8mm in diameter, apparently. Equivalent to a size 11 knitting needle.
14:29 jcamins Ooh, you do use rosewood.
14:29 jcamins I was going to ask.
14:30 jcamins Brazilian *Koha*?
14:30 jcamins :)
14:36 druthb lol. Koha and Koa...it's easy to fumble. I do it all the time on my inventory sheet.
14:37 druthb I see I did it twice.. Thanks for the catch. :)
14:38 druthb Rosewood is really nice to turn; it is very fine-grained, so you can do neat details without it splitting out or chipping.
14:38 * jcamins is disappointed... he really thought there was such a thing as Koha wood.
14:38 jcamins Rose wood is really nice to hold, too. Very warm.
14:39 druthb yep. Not as heavy and dense as cocobolo or ebony, but a decent dense hardwood, unlike cedar or pine, which are practically unworkable for what I do.
14:42 druthb The metal tube in the middle of these slim pens is 7 mm diameter, and the metal parts are just shy of 9 mm, so that kinda sets the lower limit on size for mine; when the wood gets that thin, it's pretty fragile.
14:43 * jcamins thinks he needs to find a 10mm pen to see whether he could get used to it
14:44 jcamins Are the pen cartridges replaceable?
14:46 druthb yes. The twist pens use Cross-style refills, the clicks come with Parker gel ink.
14:52 druthb I just added a couple of very slim ones, jcamins--2010-028, an olive wood, and 2010-043, in mahogany. The mahogany is 10 mm at it's largest.
14:53 jcamins :)
14:53 jcamins Should I be concerned about the fact that I'm enjoying looking at office supplies?
14:54 druthb I can do just about any shape, in most any of the woods I work, so custom work is no problem--and I don't charge extra for that.
14:54 druthb Naah! Call it "art", if you want to soothe your conscience. :)
14:56 druthb I'm doing some experimenting toward some other small turnings; bottle stoppers, compact mirrors, little bowls and things, even buttons. So far, I'm not happy enough with the outcomes to post pictures of them, but it's coming along.
15:00 jcamins I guess mechanical pencils are more difficult?
15:01 druthb Not much; the mechanism is self-contained, so not much problem there; the length of the wooden bits must be more precise for those.
15:01 druthb I've got a bunch of pencils lined up in the works--just gotta get 'em finished and take pictures.
15:02 druthb After I finish posting this batch of pics that I have, I've got some more fan pulls and keychains I'd like to knock out this weekend.
15:05 druthb Early on, I had problems with the pencil mechanisms I was getting, so I stepped up to a little nicer brand; they cost a bit more, but I have a lot less trouble with them breaking down--almost never, now.
15:16 druthb welcome back, magnus. :)
15:17 magnus thanks druthb

18:20 chris How's the weekend going?
18:20 * jcamins still hasn't made any real progress on his seminar preparations, nor written any papers on the collation of Avant-Garde books, so... probably better not to ask. ;)
